| For biology major, and that you can afford it, go Tulane. Sounds like she loves it. |
| Don’t back out of ED at Tulane or your school will get banned |
This is SO helpful thank you |
Yes a choice to make. Drive thru margaritas or cross burnings. |

With truly above average stats (high GPA and at least 33 ACT) and a very strong Why Tulane essay your DD could EA and explain in the Other Information section of the Common App that financial package is a factor, and Tulane is her first choice if the tuition cost could be closer to in state options. Something like that. Apply for the full tuition scholarships.
Your DD would be best served if she can knock their socks off on why she wants to go there, how she plans to contribute and why she loves Nola. Tulane knows that if a person isn’t into Nola (like the prior PP), it’s not gonna work. To that PP: Tulane is in the Garden District, which is lovely and has amazing restaurants, parks and architecture. The school has its own police unit that keeps the campus and surrounding area safe. Savvy people know how to navigate the city and steer clear of questionable parts. |

| I think there is a real life lesson in leaving your home state for college. |
Thank you- she has 34ACT and 4.1 GPA. Extracurricular, Essays and “why” are all very strong. At a private school. Toured Tulane twice and loved it. |
| Edit to add I know her test score is strong but her GPA wouldn’t necessarily be scholarship strong. I do know they have service scholarships she could be a strong candidate for |
That GPA with that high ACT should be fine at Tulane to apply to all the scholarships. If she has lots of APs and good scores, mention it. If there’s geographic or other interesting diversification, mention it. Make sure she has had contact with her regional admissions officer, and that they know she’s visited twice and Tulane is her first choice. Demonstrated interest (seriousness that DD will attend) is everything. |
| This isn’t even close- Tulane. |
| Also be very clear why a kid from the DMV is up for going to school in the South. Personally I think the Mississippi delta has some interesting biology, and any research that can be done on trying to retain that biodiversity and the location, which is below sea level, can only help. |

I went to law school at Tulane and it was the best three years of my life, but I had very much wanted to live in New Orleans for a long time. And it was everything I dreamed it would be.
That said, I'm not sure that paying Tulane tuition is a reasonable thing if you can get in-state Va Tech. If loans are part of it, it's a no brainer to go to Va Tech; avoid that debt. If you can afford either easily with no debt? Tulane. |
They are daiquiris, not margaritas, but good point. |
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. While we have enough in the account to cover four years at Tulane, there wouldn’t be extra for grad school if that’s the path she takes. We could help some out of pocket |
