Tulane Vs Virginia Tech

DD is super torn between these two. She loves both. Interested in biology.

Obviously, money is one factor. But, beyond that, what are pros and cons about the student experience and education.

I know they’re two totally different schools, but with Tulane accepting so much of their class via ED, she really only has one week to make a choice.

Another point I would love feedback on is that if she doesn’t get into tech, there is likely no way she can get into Tulane (RD). I’m honestly more worried about her acceptance into tech because I know they’re don’t like her private school.

I'm surprised Tech doesn't like a certain private school. I know there are colleges like this, but thought it was normally private colleges. Is it because they don't trust the yield from your school? As in tons apply, but very few attend?

Can you afford both? Are you in state for VA? Very different schools and settings.

There's really no comparison in any way, money, location, school culture.

In state for VA. Can afford both, but I wouldn’t say money “is no object” especially if she wants to go to grad school.

I think so! That is what I have gathered. It seems to have gotten better in recent years but was pretty extreme when they were dealing with the over enrolling problem

I know- they are so different. But she is really torn. Just trying to find the best overall experience

DD went to Tulane, won one of the full tuition scholarships - so be sure to apply for those. She loved it but it really is work hard play hard. I’d say it’s best for smart kids with social savvy that can handle a lot of distractions. Loved Nola, it really was a cool and enriching experience. You’d probably want to visit both campuses before committing to ED.

Thank you so much- she visited and loved it! Glad to hear your daughter loved it

Tulane is the easier admit. They cater to wealthy yet average kids unlike VT.

I’m the PP whose DD went to Tulane. She was in the honors program and was able to distinguish herself there. Had great mentors, research opportunities, study abroad and excellent post-graduation placement.

DD has above average stats but has fallen in love with the school. Hoping if she attends it will be more of a “big fish small pond” environment for her

I don't know firsthand about Tech, other than its excellent reputation. But what you will get at Tulane is smaller class sizes, an emphasis on service learning connected with the curriculum that will likely get your DD out into the field, and opportunities for research directly with professors. I’m pretty sure none of DD’s classes were taught by TAs. She took full advantage of the many things Tulane has to offer. Scholarships, research grants, funded study abroad - and she had two mentors in particular that helped her along the way. I realize people call Tulane a party school, but really it’s a R1 research university in a party city. Having the maturity to navigate that is what can set her apart.

Tulane is in New Orleans. VaTech is in the Bible Belt.
