If you cannot focus to do your job, then you should not feel safe.

A little exaggerated

I just mean - an employee (under the threat of relocation) intending to leave becomes less committed and less productive, and shifts focus toward finding a new opportunity.

While posting on dcum.

government shutdown currently, not posting during working hours

I would not move to ED right now. It’s a hot mess and always on the cutting block. Even if the agency itself isn’t, they want to cut existing programs and it is constant stress to work for an agency that the administration clearly does not want to exist. If you still want to take it, you should do deep research on the specific job, how it’s funded, who you report to, etc etc. And keep looking at safer agencies once you have it. From the pan to the fire is right.

If you are early career then find a private sector job.

Thanks for the advice, I think I will stay with USDA for now. Hopefully, the relocation plan will be dragged after midterm election, hopefully, there will be strong push back and there will be no large scale relocation.

Not in early career phase.

My choice: current USDA position (if no relocation; but relocation is very likely) > another federal position in DC metro area (so that I don't have to move) > accept USDA relocation offer (leaving DC metro area, maybe come back later or moving away permanently) > private sector job (only if being fired, which is unlikely. It is very unlikely that USDA will get rid of more people in my agency, given that many people already left this year, and many more will leave if being forced to relocated).

That being said, it is unlikely for me to go to private sector. I will stay with federal for a few more years till retirement.

I am confused by the inclusion of DoD/DHS in your question. DoD runs its own education system and you would not work for Dept of Ed if you are working for DoD in their school system.

I mean DoD/DHS are safer agencies, if the offer is from DoD/DHS, I will be happy to take it and stay in DC area.

Neither USDA nor Education Department is safe, if I want to have a fed position in DC area for the next few years.

No plan to leave federal, unless I am fired. I have invested so many years in federal and would like to stay for some more years, in order to get pension and retiree health insurance.

PP you quoted.

Look, I understand. I was a previous USDA worker too but took DRP 2.0. Got very depressed because it was my dream job and wanted to retire a Fed.

But that dream was crushed and I had to move on for my family. I got a new job in local government.

I'm now focusing on getting a pension and retiree health insurance with this company instead.

Good luck with your decision.

It’s not certain if and when the USDA will make you move, so I would stay there until you get more details. There may be another federal opening you can get at that time, or maybe a private sector opportunity until you can go back to government.

More cuts to Education this week. Sad state of affairs.

Doing what...grants? Dept of Education is a very shaky situation. I wouldn't do that. USDA will pretty much always be around.
