Agree. My mom was fired as a church secretary for not allowing a big donor to get a check off the church's account without going through proper financial authorization. Long story. The unemployment office agreed she was not fired for a valid reason. And she got her compensation. There's a chance you can also get your comp. If you still have anything to sign, try to negotiate. |
+1, hire a lawyer. |

Op so sorry this happened to you. If I can give you a suggestion start today looking for an other job. When I was forced out (no performance issues, just internal politics) I was in total shock and for months I felt frozen and in shock. When I finally decided to look for an other job I had a big gap in my resume that suddenly made me an undesirable candidate and I had to reinvent my career in an other field

I'm so sorry. A lot of layoffs and firings are personality related or "who we like better". As a newbie, you were the easiest target. I hear, but can't confirm, that hiring an attorney rarely results in a win/big settlement. So maybe it's worth a consult but not to go forward. If you can negotiate some additional severance and the right to say you were laid off, that might be best. |

Do you have a probationary period?
Sorry to hear you got fired. It’s a rough job market right now. |

OP. I was fired (and several colleagues) because a new government customer didn’t like me making suggestions or calmly voicing opinions at technical exchange meetings yet that’s what I was hired to do 5 years ago! Others in my department faced similar fate before it was my turn. Many toxic workplace environments nowadays! My manager didn’t even stand up for me despite 5+ years of stellar reviews plus recent performance bonus!
Unless you are fired for gross misconduct, file for unemployment and move on. I ended up getting a better job offer one month later. |
| Please print out and save everything you have about the firm's financials including the meeting they had yesterday. If they try to deny you unemployment, you could maybe use those. |
The disabled my access immediately. But I will file anyway. My overall feeling is one of relief - it was not a good fit and I was already applying for jobs - looks like the decision to leave was made for me! Thanks all. |
This- I thought it didn't matter? You just get get UMP if you quit? |
I am sorry for your firing. It stinks. That being said, aren't private companies considered "at will" employment? You could quit and walk away right now, and they can also fire you at any point for any reason, unless you are being fired for a specific protected reason, such as religion, your biological sex, being too old or being pregnant. Getting fired for being the newest employee, for not producing, for screwing up, or even because you annoy the boss with too many questions are not protected classes. Where would the lawsuit be? |
| This thread is funny I'm sure OP is working in at "at will" state. All you screaming "get a lawyer" are wasting everyones time. |
+1 |
| you were probably still a probationary employee and they decided to end it now. |
A lot of people are amassing months to years-long gaps right now. Layoffs left and right and not enough jobs to absorb everyone. Sorry, OP. It’s not pretty out there. |
In some industries in recent years — Big Four accounting, notably — they’ve been inventing performance issues to let people go so they don’t have to announce widespread layoffs. It’s sneaky and ugly. Whoever said consult an attorney is an idiot though. Don’t waste the money you need while you look for new work. |
