Why Bama ? It is ranked 170 and keeps dropping

Rank 150-200 sounds right to me. Why is that surprising, OP?

I hadn't looked at US News in years. Seems like Bama is ranked around the same as JMU, which makes sense. I would probably have seen similar rankings 30 years ago. I don't think the low ranking is as indicative of anything you might be thinking, OP. The difference in schools in these rankings are so marginal and meaningless and the magazine is infamous for rigging the rankings to make it look like schools are moving up and down in order to sell more editions.

Bama does have a certain culture attractive to certain students. Does it bother me? No.

Also a good honors college.

Rankings. Mean. Nothing.

Say that again.

Me neither, to each his own, but I would hope this would shut up the ridiculous troll who keeps insisting that high stats kids are ditching the Ivy + and applying to 'Bama

How do you rig your own rankings? I've heard of schools doing it (Columbia).

Life for these kids has been a joyless suck for much of their teen years.

Good for them for wanting to have a fun normal college experience.

You all are from the John Hughes through American Pie generations. How on earth are you shocked that young people are finally back to acting like young people who want a fun, rowdy college experience??

The past few years of judgy, puritanical, dogmatic, no fun thought police is NOT a normal college experience or developmentally appropriate for late teens and early 20s. Be happy that a big chunk of college kids are finally resetting back to normal.

In case you didn't know, that's a HUGE deal for a certain type of southern family whose goal in life is to get their daughters and sons married to other kids of well-to-do families of the south who are in sororities and fraternities in those types of institutions. They're the state politicians, business owners and company managers of the South, and their world is encompassed within those boundaries. The rest of the world does not exist. All blonde, all white, all Barbie, of course. Brunettes tolerated, POC need not apply.

I have no dog in this fight, but seriously? Ever heard of the Divine Nine?

My point exactly. Those you mention aren't getting the attention in the Sorority Rush videos. Segregation is very real. If you're Black, you go to X and Y. If you're White, you go to A and B, plus you get all the attention on social media.

Get real, PP.

I live in Texas and there are lots of people going to Bama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc., when they don't get into UT because they want that type of school. Sometimes their stats get them into UGA or Auburn.

Some say that Alabama is the Bucknell of the Gulf Coast. Strong pipeline to working on oil rigs and…pipelines.

There are lots of people from CA and TX going everywhere.

Those two states are in the top 5 feeder states to nearly every top 20 school.

Exactly.

Apparently here rankings matter UNLESS it is a southern school. I'm not even knocking southern schools...its just that on DCUM the only schools are either a T10 or a southern school with the pleasant weather, the football, the fun, and the pretty coeds. Everything else is dumped on.
