Why Bama ? It is ranked 170 and keeps dropping

Seriously why are people looking or choosing OOS Alabama? It’s one of the lowest ranked schools and keeps declining. What am I missing?

I don't have a dog in the fight re Alabama but with how much it gets boosted I would have thought it would be higher since also this board is also very literal and serious around rankings. My state's flagship is ranked much better than Alabama apparently but also WAY below other flagships that get maligned here all the time.

Full ride for NMSF? Kids who want a big school in the south? Generous merit? Kids who don’t have the stats to get into T10 schools? Space force is moving there along with lots of large DoD employment options?

UC Merced is a top 50 school by US News. Equity is key at US News. Alabama doesn't score well in that department.

Yes, NMF (not NMSF) full ride is a good reason. Imagine a pre-med kid from a modest family. As much as I can't stand the Bama boosters here, the full ride reduces the nearly 800k (full pay private + med school) to "just" 400k, making it much more doable. With the current administration's 200k max lifetime loan, this is about the only way to go for such a kid, besides other big NMF schools such as UT Dallas and so on. Ranking be damned.

Equity is not keeping Alabama at 170.

UC Merced is ranked high because the Regents offered attractive packages and grants to productive and prestigious faculty from other schools.

I just find it hard to understand that DCUM is so rank obsessed but then bottom of the barrel schools like Bama get recommended.

It's a crap school, but it's notorious for Sorority Rush. In case you didn't know, that's a HUGE deal for a certain type of southern family whose goal in life is to get their daughters and sons married to other kids of well-to-do families of the south who are in sororities and fraternities in those types of institutions. They're the state politicians, business owners and company managers of the South, and their world is encompassed within those boundaries. The rest of the world does not exist. All blonde, all white, all Barbie, of course. Brunettes tolerated, POC need not apply.

Having a few smart kids (thanks to $) doesn’t make a bad school good. Bama, no matter how you look at it, is not a good school.

Except they aren’t. Maybe a state politician and maybe somebody that owns some piddly business…but most of the folks with real money send their kids to the same top schools OOS as people everywhere.

There was a recent article about how some of the Bama sorority girls became famous online and earned some bucks as influencers. Nearly all mentioned how “great it was to not have to take any loans” and graduate debt free.
