It is legal to conduct business meetings and train employees on visitor visas, which is what they were doing. I know, because we are foreigners and my husband has been asked to do this, and our attorney confirmed it was legal. So yes, ICE was lying.

Well, this was a clusterf*** for sure, but whether the Koreans had the right visas is less clear cut:

I think it was a wink-wink nudge nudge grey area given the fact that the "right" visa flat out does not exist, and the Koreans were as close to compliance as they could possibly be within the visa system, and while conducting activities that will create US jobs. Shackling them, the treatment they received in detention, all of that was well beyond the pale and is going to have a generation's worth of impact on Korean impressions of the United States, and willingness to do business with us.

This is not a total digression from the Eastern MS case, to be honest. Just as immigration officials had the option to pursue the Korean case with some discretion, they also had the option not to attempt to apprehend these two guys in front of a middle school. They had the option not to rough them up in front of hundreds of children. At every point, they are choosing the maximalist, most traumatic, and most harmful option.

Do you have a video that shows exactly what happened? Can you provide proof that this was the 'maximalist, most traumatic, and most harmful option' or is that just your opinion?

This article suggests that the Koreans might have been targeted to make up Steven Millers quota of 3000 daily arrests by ICE.

This article reads more like an Opinion piece than a presentation of actual facts.

Does someone have specific facts as to what actually happened at Eastern Middle School?

We can easily tell you're of a certain political bent.

The facts are that two men were arrested by ICE near this school, there was some type of chase and muscly handcuffing, and there was a very visible perp walk in front of the school that many parents and kids were able to witness. There was a community outcry and this school received multiple reports of stresses out kids, because of lot of them are Hispanic, and there is palpable fear that ICE is going after Hispanics, regardless of whether they immigrants or not, legal or not.

But according to you, that's all "opinions".

Also, immigrants know that ICE can make stuff up and change their status from "legal" to "illegal", since they just did that to several dozen Koreans in Georgia at the Hyundai plant.

We can't help you if you live in an alternate reality.

Nope. You actually can't tell a single thing about me from a random online post.

I'm just tired of people posting fake news. There was an article all over my FB feed about a woman whose nanny got arrested by ICE. Turns out it was a completely fake and made up story. So now, I know to ask for more facts before jumping to conclusions and I would hope that you would support the same focus on facts.

You need to stop referring to human beings as "legal" or "illegal"

These are offensive, out dated terms

"undocumented" or "documented" is not offensive and more accurate.

I agree with you in general PP, but I think it's worth noting that "documented" folks are also being subjected to adverse immigration enforcement. Rumeysa Ozturk, Victor Avilya, Mahmoud Khalil, and Badar Suri all had valid green cards/visas/status in the United States. The Korean workers also had valid visas.

It is also true that ICE has been detaining/deporting folks directly from immigration hearings, targeting folks who by definition are documented as asylum seekers/refugees, and who are turning up for mandated "check ins."

Anyone, on either side, can make up any 'description' they please. I'm not making a judgement either way unless I actually see a video. If you have one, please do post a link because I'd be interested in seeing what actually occurred!

Now I know you're not talking in good faith.
You think there would have been a camera set up , waiting for an ICE raid?

Why then would the Superintendent of the largest school district send out a letter to all families in the school district?

I've seen photos and heard multiple eyewitness descriptions. They paraded those men across the drop-off lane.

I also think the nanny situation happened though was exaggerated by the nanny (I don't think they got on the bus and demanded papers - but I do think they likely grabbed some folks at the bus stop).

Because this is MCPS. You can count on MCPS to send out a letter that doubles down on the very politics that got Trump elected.
