Sigh, we just enrolled in parochial but they do get tablets while at school. The only screen free schools I could find within 30 minutes of us were way far right Opus Dei and evangelical schools.

Different school actually. It is interesting that it’s only the most conservative schools that abolished the EdTech…

Ours is not Opus Dei but it is very conservative. Comfortable for us, but I know it’s not for everyone. We visited several schools and this was the only one with no EdTech at all.

Yes, if you’re talking about Saint Jerome Academy, no electronics including in middle school. But it is very conservative (we are not but it’s manageable and we go to a different church).

Sorry somehow my response posted somewhere in the quotes. Trying again:

Our DC’s school sends chromebooks home with the third graders and it got out of hand quickly for many. Did they really expect kids to follow proper use instructions at 8-9 year old? And then wonder why they have ADHD?

Which Quaker school? Sidwell and SSFS both start iPads in K or PK.

How do the NOVA parochial elementary schools handle screens? St. Agnes? St. James?

I went on a tour of St. Agnes and they definitely do have tablets but they told me they didn’t use them much in kindergarten. My impression was that screen use at St. Thomas More was pretty high—they were very proud of their digital literacy class that started in Kindergarten. I know that St. Michael was using IXL learning.

Out of hand how? Please share because I’d like to know what to watch out for. Also do you mind sharing what school?

The chromebooks had no administrative or parental controls features so the kids could go on any websites and do anything. Unless parents were supervising every minute, there was no other way to restrict certain sites or time spent on the chromebooks. Whatever happened to focusing on foundational teachings, with class work and homework using good old fashioned textbooks and paper, without the distraction of screens. Kids at this age don’t need to be learning from projectors or screens. Not a fan.

If it’s Holton, they really don’t use the computers that much in third grade. The homework they do is mostly math fact fluency stuff (like IXL or math fact lab). All the other homework is done by hand.

There is very little (if any) unsupervised computer time, but I do wish they would let us put some parental controls on to block YouTube and what not. Talk to your daughter about what is allowed in your family.

The ridiculous iPads my now high schoolers used in middle school are the gift that keep on giving. Movies and music, IG and Snapchat. Want to BURN them.

They were an enormous waste of learning, time and money and continue to be so. Thanks for nothing.

Are lessons at Holton taught the traditional way like with whiteboards / markers? Or with screens and projector?

I’m just curious how that works with math instruction.

Sidwell has EdTech in lower school and is Quaker. Great that yours does not have it, but being Quaker does not always mean low ed tech.
