FCPS AP/IB Participation Rates in 2024-25

And that is a pain point too- some IB schools have AP options and others don’t. Get rid of IB. No one is taking it how it was intended.

If IB was so good, all other top FCPS schools would be clamoring for it to replace AP-they aren’t!

Anonymous wrote:Am I reading this properly? Are these numbers the percentage of kids at a HS that took at least 1 AP or IB class? If that is, the numbers are deceiving for a variety of reasons.

Most kids at an IB school will not take an IB class until they are juniors, the exception to that rule will be kids who accelerated in math and had A1H in 6th or 7th grade. That means that the base number of kids even eligible to take an IB class should be 50%. Is that 30% all kids at the HS or 30% of the eligible kids at the HS? If it is 30% out of the entire high school it is an unfair measure since only 50% were even eligible to take an IB class.

Second, are those IB classes SL or HL classes? HL classes are sort of the equivalent to AP classes. I would guess that most of those IB classes were SL classes and not HL classes, meaning they are closer to Honors classes then AP classes.

Finally, the point of IB is not to take individual classes but to earn the diploma....

FCPS IB participation rates include standard level which for English classes for example could be compared to Honors. IB SL gets a 1 gpa boost while Honors gets .5. VDOE publishes the relevant IB statistics at https://www.doe.virginia.gov/data-policy-funding/data-reports/program-participation-data/advanced-programs

IB seniors are diploma candidates. Data has been updated for 2023-24. There is no 2024-25.

McLean 65.5%
Oakton 58.54%
Langley 55.72%
Madison 53.92%
Woodson 46.57%
Chantilly 44.92%
Fairfax 44.35%
South County 42.62%
Lake Braddock 41.91%
West Springfield 41.26%
Centreville 37.85%
Hayfield 37.42%
Westfield 33.7%
Herndon 27.86%
West Potomac 26.59%
Falls Church 24.37%

IB:

Marshall 45.9%
Justice 43.79%
Robinson 37.76%
Edison 33.8%
Mount Vernon 31.17%
South Lakes 30.53%
Annandale 27.55%
Lewis 23.27%

No big surprises, but the participation rates at some schools skew higher because of pilot programs or existing policies at certain schools. At McLean, all pre-calculus students got switched to AP Pre-Calculus in 2024-25 and at Marshall and Justice IB English is the default English course for non-ESOL students.

Would be interesting to know IB diploma vs AP scholars. I know they are not the same, but it is an indicator.

I’m pretty sure those are IB diploma numbers.

Entire IB program for only 100 to get the diploma is strong support that program doesn’t work and should be pulled-let alone when only 10 kids! If consider weapons-check performative arts, IB is the weapons check of programs. It’s for show to say it’s there only.

DP. When 82-97% of the kids at IB schools are not getting IB diplomas, it’s past time to admit its implementation in FCPS has been a failure.

It’s small wonder most families will object if redistricted into IB high schools.

I'm honestly confused here. Why is the number for TJ so low? Shouldn't all students at TJ be taking at least one AP class? Aren't they the best of the best? How can their number be so close to the other high performers, who also contain students who just happen to live within their borders?

This percentage is based on all students at the school last year.

If you look at just juniors and seniors the percentage at TJ is much higher.

Right. Don't most high achieving freshmen take AP human geology? Don't most high achieving sophomores take AP World? I would expect the numbers at TJ to be way higher than, say Oakton.

I think you mean AP Human Geography.

I don't know if most high-achieving freshmen take one of the limited number of AP courses available to freshmen at most schools (e.g., AP Human Geography, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Pre-Calculus) simply because they are AP courses. I do think most high-achieving sophomores take AP World History.

In any event, the percentages listed earlier were taken directly from the VDOE web site.

FCPS separately reports AP participation for juniors and seniors at the 17 AP high schools. The latest data posted is from 2022-23. If you crunch those numbers, here's the higher numbers you get:

TJ 100%
Langley 79.2%
McLean 77.2%
Oakton 75.0%
Madison 74.7%
Woodson 68.3%
Lake Braddock 63.4%
Fairfax 59.4%

South County 57.3%
Centreville 56.8%

Students at TJ don’t take a social studies class in 9th grade. The only students at TJ that take AP classes are the students in AP Precalculus/ AP calculus or AP CS A - data structures.

100% of TJ graduates take AP classes.
