Are they skipping Frankenstein? |
At the very least, go to coreknowledge.org and download the free Activity Book and Teacher Guide for the units, and your daughter can be doing the vocabulary, etc. from the more advanced book (the ELL book is there too, so you can compare the differences). |
| Does anyone know what Julius west is using? I’ve been looking through my 6th grader’s work and it doesn’t appear to be CKLA. |
There should be a syllabus in mymcps |
You would think so, but it’s not there. I’ve also been through my kid’s notebook which has syllabii for math, social studies, science and Spanish, but not English. |
This is not the case for every middle school. |
Yes. They are doing all other units. |
That is exactly why parents need to reach out to the school. They will not be accountable for what they are supposed to do without parental complaints. And parents should escalate if their concerns are not addressed. |
Kid should email the teacher to ask for the syllabus. |
|
Here is what they should be learning in each grade:
English 6:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aZeAlNINm8fHAAVyVNbwJcQ1u14vK-b52qRjF_V1zx0/edit?tab=t.0 English 7: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GbCzfM3glwSUsf1DSYrYvCDhz4JgECgsStTaHLk8J3I/edit?tab=t.0 English 8: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HinKw5UZlW-7_hwMIktrkK045jnmSWd9JyEM191GgOg/edit?tab=t.0 If your child is not doing this curriculum (and is not in the humanities magnet), start with their teacher. If needed, escalate, starting with the content specialist and AP and then moving up. |
So yes, they have trimmed even the standard 8th grade CKLA by removing Frankenstein. |
Yes, that was answered above. They removed 2 units from 6th grade and 1 unit from 7th and 8th grades. |
What do you mean not the case for every middle school? The PP is correct that non ELD students should be using the regular CKLA version. If not, why not? Have the department resource teacher or AP explain. |
Does your student have a hard copy of the reader or are they just given a selection of printouts of the reader? |
Do you mean the book or the activity set? My kid is reading from an actual bound book but the activities are handouts. |
