| OP, I'm a teacher at a different Maryland county. It's the same thing here. I'm a secondary English teacher expected to teach novels to level 1 MLs alongside students reading at almost college levels. I have no co-teacher or supports. |
| I believe the sheltered classes are still there for science and math but they took them away from social studies and English |
Makes sense. Let’s take away the supported English class for kids who don’t know English 😳🙄 |
Makes no sense not to do it for English |
Complain to the ELD secondary office, if there's enough of us doing so, maybe they will listen |
Highschool? That's great. They are probably in Honors English no less. |
Our MCEA rep is planning on doing just that |
|
What MCPS doesn’t understand is that at places like Wheaton where the population of English Language Learners is huge the “push in” model for kids who know no English is a recipe for failure.
|
Yes there is only Honors English now |
| Aren’t there far fewer new students this year who speak zero English? I assume Trump has scared off immigrants trying to cross the border. |
|
I attended DCPS elementary school in the 1980s and the kids who could not speak English seemed to spend most of the day in class with us and maybe an hour or two with the ESL teacher.
We did not have a special ESL section. |
Oh wow, I am so glad you updated. My just graduated from Wheaton. Spent first semester senior year in AP English but decided to drop down to English Honors for second semester. "Honors" 12th grade English sounded awful. Said they did not read entire books, just abridged/excerpted and that they spent class time reading taking turns reading the reading aloud! This "honors for all" thing is a farce. There should be AP, Honors, and Grade Level, or something of that sort. It's ridiculous to throw all the kids into one level except for AP, especially at a school like Wheaton with such a huge breadth of student experiences. I understand your post is about it being bad for the ELL and I agree. But it's also bad for the kids who are at a high level because the class is not challenging enough. |
And it sucks for kids who would like a more advanced English class but don't quite want to take AP English. |
| Yes, just not at the richer school. Its sad a teacher doesn't want students - seems a bit racist. |
Sometimes I really want to go into the homeschooling section of dcum and every time someone complains about homeschooling is really hard I should brag about why I go to public school. I swear homeschooling parents are like the most insecure social awkward twits |
