I'm guessing Wednesday.

I teach middle school and I still don't know 100% what I'm teaching or the number of sections of each class, let alone which students I will have.

This. There is a reason you won't get teacher assignments until close to opening day.

I teach elementary and I don’t know who my students will be at this point.

It seems like it should be this hard.

The counselors make the schedule. They don’t work over the summer, they come back at the beginning of August and that’s when they start building the rosters.

Not in elementary school. We teachers actually did class placement lists in June and I think they mostly stay the same and that’s what gets loaded into sis by the SIA.

Our school does the same. Teachers completed the class lists in June.

The school doesn't want to handle complaints so parents are told, absolutely, as late as possible. Once I knew why, at least I understood. Before I knew why I just thought it was another area of incompetence.

Lots of things FCPS does, the timeline, if explained to parents, would make them look better to parents.

The principal always makes last minute changes the week before school starts when parents start calling.

It’s also to protect teachers. They don’t want parents hounding the teachers too early.

former teacher here

Lots of reasons:

People are still enrolling. And, sometimes they do not enroll until after school starts, so principal wants as accurate a number as possible.

Enrollment numbers--principal may be hoping to hire another teacher before school starts. This, of course, could affect the lists. Principal may still be uncertain whether first or second grade gets another teacher if the numbers are close. (I taught one year where we got cut a teacher after school started. That is not fun to have to divvy up a class. But, this works both ways.)

Prior poster mentioned complaints. This is true. Parents will call if they don't want a certain teacher or child is separated from her "best friend" but may not realize that "best friend's mom" asked for the separation.

There are a lot more reasons, but these are the key ones.

Teachers don’t report until the 11th, so teachers won’t see lists until then. You should hear sometime between the afternoon of the 11th and the day before your open house. (elementary)

I was under the impression they were drafted before break and fine tuned as needed after.

We just got our teaching assignments last Thursday. Things are moving around all summer.
