Retiring in Williamsburg VA

Easy to fly out of Richmond. Probably have to add a connection to a major airport, but it doesn’t impact the price much. Look on Google Flights to compare.

Several couples I know retired there too. They all love it. I am also considering it.

Something people really need to consider when retiring and moving to a new area is healthcare. Are there adequate doctors and hospitals to serve the population?

My hometown in central VA has recently had an influx of retirees and folks moving there for the mountains, lake, and lower cost of living, but the place has one hospital company and few doctors. People talk of hours-long waits in the emergency room and they will often drive an hour or more to Charlottesville, Roanoke, or Richmond for better healthcare. It’s a real problem.

Certainly Richmond is better than Lynchburg, for example- which only has Centra Health. At least Richmond has multiple hospitals and emergency rooms.

No issues.

There are two big hospital systems in the Hampton Roads area (and a third in Richmond). Norfolk and Richmond each have medical schools (MCV and EVMS) associated with their main hospitals. A big hospital is a bit south of W'burg on the peninsula.

There also is a VA Hospital in Hampton. Ft Eustis and Langley AFB each have military medical clinics on base.

Not sure what you are saying, but MCV is a good medical school and good medical care is available in metro Richmond and nearby counties.

Most of Williamsburg area is not high tisk for flooding. No doubt some specific areas are at risk - like low lying land near a river.

I don't understand the "without the hurricanes" comment. I would guess the Outer Banks and Florida (though it seems the St Augustine/Jacksonville area never is hit by an Atlantic hurricane) are the worst for Hurricanes, but coastal VA is definitely within the hurricane band. I mean, my family in Maine worries about hurricanes and they often hit Nova Scotia.

Williamsburg? Nah. I live in Norfolk and Williamsburg is comparatively mountainous.
