I understand where the OP is coming from, but it just seems like this was reno'd in the 1980s or early 1990s and is overdue for a more tasteful/timless whole house remodel. It's a lovely area but $2.3m is a lot to pay for a not-huge house that will need well north of $500k in renovation. |
Say what you will about using a different period in the interior, but if I'm looking at the house right I think the expansion was the curved situation on the left side of the house where the family room/MBR is and maybe the whole upper floors? I honestly can't tell. I think the outside looks great. It's on a very small lot and it probably became as big as possible and I think they nailed it. |
I don’t love the bannister but otherwise it’s fine? Just because it looks like a farmhouse doesn’t mean it has to have red checked gingham curtains inside. |
lol if you sank 1/2 mil into renovation of that house you have only yourself to blame. What is the issue exactly? |
It reminds me of Cat's house on Real Housewives of DC, but my memory may be off. |
The inside and outside do not match. The outside calls for a classic, timeless look. Not whatever that modern-ish monstrosity is. Ick. |
NP. I have no personal knowledge. From the Dept. of Permitting online website, permits apps for 1993-94. |
Great neighborhood. I love the curb appeal, 10/10.
The inside is not my taste, starting with the staircase. I would replace the railings with a more complementary banister, spindles, and newel post. Paint the risers a white. Redo the entire kitchen. The lighting selections (90's track lighting??) are not my preference either. Love the area rugs! It almost is like an episode out of house hunters - person 1 - I want modern clean lines and a really striking staircase! person 2 - Ok, I would like a classic farmhouse in a pale yellow, with a lovely curbside appeal. |
They don’t match, but it’s intentional and well done. The person responsible for the inside is also responsible for the outside and on the outside, I can’t really tell where the original house begins and ends. In the 90’s you people would have eaten this up, lol. Would I walk up to this exterior and wish for a Nancy Meyers interior? Yes. Yes I would. But I can appreciate that it is well done and doing what it was supposed to do. You don’t have to like something to appreciate it. |
I can tell you this house was substantially remodeled, both interior AND exterior, in the late 80s-early 90s. And extremely well done. The original exterior looked nothing like what you see today and I do not mean this in a bad way as the remodel was extremely high quality and well done. But we are not looking at a lovely maintained historic colonial from 1910 even if the original house is hidden somewhere inside the remodel.
In looking at the pictures carefully, a standard central hall from 1910-1920s was added to one side with a family room, where the big bay is, and an entirely new roofline added with a prominent attic gable and the slightly curving front bay, wrapping the original central hall colonial with a 1990s twist of the craftsman shingles (predating the craftsman craze that started a decade later). The architect was talented, the builders excellent, and all in all, excellent job. As for the interior, the only thing I don't like is the staircase but it'd be easy to replace the railings with something more traditional. I do like the kitchen, I can see why people claim it's dated but it's refreshing after all these shaker and quasi shaker and now euro modern kitchens of the past 15 years that are, frankly, boring and excessive. This kitchen, despite being 30 years old, seems fresh and new to me by comparison. |
I really like it. You must have poor taste. This looks like Architectural Digest level, vintage 90s. It’s different in a good way. |
Gray ceilings? storm clouds coming |
Totally! Looks like it was lived in by a couple where he is Euro and she is American |
NP, and I doubt anyone is looking for red checked gingham curtains or suggesting that would be better, but this is very incongruous, and ugly. |
I think the interior looks amazing!
It’s modern, sleek w/all clean lines. |
