I'm not saying this system is necessarily "inferior" but if you would look at the course work you would see the disparity in difficulty and rigour. The high level courses taught in junior year and senior year has been already discussed in grade 9 in his previous school.

Did you provide the school and the counselors with a detailed curriculum and test results so that they could understand this? They can't just take your word for it.

Yes? All met with "I'm sorry but we cannot guarantee the authenticity".. and the like.

Yup and that concludes my engagement through decent or polite means. It's ALWAYS a political or social thing. I guess the people here who describe us as "importing the third world" lol

This is not an FCPS problem. The state writes standards and you’d have the same issue at any public school. If you’re so smart why don’t you know that?

I’d recommend emailing a counselor at the school who can give you information about courses and schedule changes.

Signing up for courses is a hot mess in FCPS. That is for everyone, not just particular people.

Ha, the first sentence in your post accused people of being ignorant and or racist, and now you are complaining that the responses to your post aren’t polite!

This is why people don’t like you!

OP: I would ask the Counselor if your child can test into the higher level classes that you are asking for. The school cannot tell you that he cannot take Honors classes, honors classes are open to everyone. Some AP classes have pre-reqs that he has to clear to take, you might need to ask about testing into those classes. Math would require a test to clear the other classes. There are a very small number of kids taking Calculus in 9th grade in FCPS, probably under 20.

Welcome to the US! The same thing happened to me in a totally different school system (full of immigrants) when I moved here many decades ago. Went with the flow, didn't study in HS and still had a high GPA, and am doing well in life.

TL;DR version. Unclench.

A lot of new comers to the U.S, especially Asians, are treated as "inferior" or incapable of adjusting to the American education system. My son, as well as the children of my contemporaries (who are immigrants) have been downgraded to low-level classes (basically regular -- non AP or honors) when they are far more capable in tackling advanced topics. Because of this flawed system, my child is behind in all subjects and fields by an entire year because the counselling unit decided to push back all his subjects into their pre requisites. E.g --> his capabilities aligned with the AP calculus course but he was pushed back into the regular algebra 2 course. His knowledge in history in his previous school back in Asia aligned with AP WH, but was pushed back, again, to the pre requisite history course. And finally, many of his previous classes back in his previous school that tackled important STEM subjects (chemistry, biology and physics) were voided and now he has to make up for such credits in future years. His entire freshman year was marked by redundancy as he breezed through everything as these topics were discussed the previous year already. And finally, his GPA was deflated as this administration did not recognize that subjects he took in his previous school were in a higher magnitude of difficulty.

This is just my story and there are so much more hidden incidents that are being swept up under the rug: lost credits that were unavailed, mistreatment by the teachers or mentors, etc. Please recognise that coming from a different educational background isn't necessarily INFERIOR.

Indonesian immigrant here. I don't know much about the degree of discrimination in the US school system but I can understand OP's complaints here. Let me tell you, the reception and treatment I received compared to my best friend who was half american and half japanese was really different (our coursework was extremely different; and I was a sci-math kinda person and she hated math). Case and point, east Asians, according to my observations, are less likely to face such issues..... I don't get why the comments here are automatically scratching racism out of the conversation. they miss the entire point OP you should really talk to your child's guidance counselor.

Same indonesian person who posted the previous comment: I think I had a slight accent. Maybe they thought I was illiterate....

Do you come here illegally expecting to get what Americans have worked for just handed to you? GTFOH!

+1. This. If you want a resolution, you need to work within the system. Also, try schedule a meeting with the counselor in-person to ask about the testing and signing up for higher level classes. It's harder to be brushed off if you meet in person, and also may make communicating your issues easier.

This is about one of the stupidest posts I’ve ever seen on here and that is saying something.

The way you wrote it OP, it sounded like they wanted to put your child in remedial classes because they’re Asian. I’m like WTF no Asian kid I know is in remedial classes.

It’s not like there are tons of white kids taking calculus in 9th grade. You are not going to get much sympathy here by coming on here with outrageous entitled demands and accusing people of racism.
