Institutional Neglect and Discrimination

One thing I can say with confidence about living in America is that your kid's destiny is not going to be determined by when they take AP calc. You're living in Virginia. You have a BUNCH of very good, in state colleges to choose from.

If your kid is going to make it and be a success in this country, the schools here are more than good enough to make that happen even if you lose a year of course progression to switching countries.

The other adjustments your child is making to language and culture are almost certainly much more important to their future.

Your attitude sucks.

I have no doubt that I moved to China (or any other country), my kids would have to take the classes deemed appropriate by that country - not by what they happened to have taken here in the U.S.

"Adjustments to the language and culture" so you're assuming he's having difficulties in this aspect? English is taught as a required subject in his previous school and as for this culture you speak of, a culture where incidents such as drug abuse, drinking and vaping within the campus are not reprimanded as strictly? And can't you empathise with him? Imagine being downgraded or belittled in intellect and capability just because you're not the same ethnicity as them. that's the adjustment he's trying to overcome.

DP. "Belittled in intellect and capability" due to his ethnicity? Are you joking? The top kids in all of our schools are almost always Asian or of Asian descent. They've also taken the classes that FCPS *requires*. Who cares what your kid took previously? He now has to take the same classes as everyone else. That's the standard. Maybe you should homeschool.

This is why people don’t like you!

The OP's accusations of "racism" are just so over-the-top and typical. Spare us all.

The way you wrote it OP, it sounded like they wanted to put your child in remedial classes because they’re Asian. I’m like WTF no Asian kid I know is in remedial classes.

It’s not like there are tons of white kids taking calculus in 9th grade. You are not going to get much sympathy here by coming on here with outrageous entitled demands and accusing people of racism.

+ a million
Precisely this.

You chose FCPS. If you are dissatisfied there are host of private schools to choose from. And lcps and pwcs and aps and falls church ps and acps. Or MoCo ps or pgps or dcps. And a host of private schools in those places as well.

Post is I don’t like it my special baby is not being given what they should get in my opinion. I am clearly fully dissatisfied but instead of finding an alternative, I am screaming racism and mistreatment and negligence.

When changing school systems, parents can get very frustrated about credits not being honored and about prereqs. But it sounds like you are upset that your DC was not skipped ahead by 1 or 2 years. FCPS is less flexible than some other districts - they just don't do that. It's not racism or anything about you or your DC. FCPS doesn't really grade skip anyone.

And ultimately, there's no reason to. Taking Calc in 9th grade would not benefit your DC in the near term or long term. It wouldn't help their high school schedule and it wouldn't help college admissions. Your DC is not missing anything by taking Algebra II in 9th grade.

I bet they moved here trying to get their kid into TJ

Yep. And when their kid wasn't accepted, they probably also cried, "racism!". I have a feeling I know who the OP is.

Replies trying to act smug here are so entertaining. TJ requires a 1 year residency before you're even eligible to apply. Of course we considered that decision lol

A lot of new comers to the U.S, especially Asians, are treated as "inferior" or incapable of adjusting to the American education system. My son, as well as the children of my contemporaries (who are immigrants) have been downgraded to low-level classes (basically regular -- non AP or honors) when they are far more capable in tackling advanced topics. Because of this flawed system, my child is behind in all subjects and fields by an entire year because the counselling unit decided to push back all his subjects into their pre requisites. E.g --> his capabilities aligned with the AP calculus course but he was pushed back into the regular algebra 2 course. His knowledge in history in his previous school back in Asia aligned with AP WH, but was pushed back, again, to the pre requisite history course. And finally, many of his previous classes back in his previous school that tackled important STEM subjects (chemistry, biology and physics) were voided and now he has to make up for such credits in future years. His entire freshman year was marked by redundancy as he breezed through everything as these topics were discussed the previous year already. And finally, his GPA was deflated as this administration did not recognize that subjects he took in his previous school were in a higher magnitude of difficulty.

This is just my story and there are so much more hidden incidents that are being swept up under the rug: lost credits that were unavailed, mistreatment by the teachers or mentors, etc. Please recognise that coming from a different educational background isn't necessarily INFERIOR.

As a person with a similar situation years ago, it's unfortunate yes but it's either that or the private schools.

So you weren't hoping to apply after living here a year?

Parents can find out where student will and won’t be placed in advance of moving to a school district- that is main reason why move to one school area/state/country v another. Sounds like OP didn’t do that so loses grounds to complain as shouldn’t have been surprise and could have gone elsewhere in DMV or states/country to support an advanced student.

If you have documentation and transcripts of some sort showing HS level classes taken, this should not be a problem. There are freshman in calculus. Alg 2 as a freshman is advanced but yes, we have freshman in higher classes.

The issue comes when kids move here without transcripts or only the parents word that they “took calculus” or “calculus topics.” Schools can’t place them in classes based upon that.

This is not discrimination. If you are that unhappy, contact NOVA as the other poster suggested, and inquire about direct enrollment. -math teacher
