Montreal: people are chill, food is absolutely excellent (and they eschew the Michelin guide, so meals were far less pretentious/expensive), great public transportation, beautiful parks. Just a great livable vibe. Every block seemed to have a hidden gem restaurant.
Lima: lively with absolutely lovely people, excellent food, stunning beaches, music, gorgeous surroundings Mexico City: busy but fun, excellent food absolutely everywhere, stunning history and art |
I love threads like this. Oslo is interesting to see. I’ve always heard people were unwelcoming to foreigners and did not engage with them. |
Mackinac Island overnights |
New Orleans (queue all the people who say it’s dirty/dumpy/dangerous)
I will always love that place for always finding humor and a reason to celebrate in everything. |

Uruguay surprised me. Everybody we met, from hotel workers, to car rental agents, to the supermarket checkout people, were exceedingly friendly and helpful and interested in engaging in real conversation. |
I will always love NO too but I must admit having been for Spring Break a few years ago, Fr Qtr kinda not as awesome as it used to be from my recollection PP ![]() |
Thank you for steering the thread in a useful direction. |
For some people - and I’m one of them - New Orleans just gets into your soul. It’s a truly special place and, despite all the city’s problems, the best place I’ve ever lived. My husband, on the other hand, can’t stand New Orleans 🤷♀️ |
Cartagena, Colombia; Stonetown, Zanzibar; Salina Island, Sicily; and Alacati, Turkey. |
Well for a happy energy + interesting culture -style vibe, I'd say:
Bamberg, Germany (and other smaller Bavarian cities) Melbourne Vienna (in the summer) For more high-octane energy, I agree with NYC & Tokyo - and would add Berlin. |
Banff for me a few years ago felt like a whole lot of Chinese tourists and overpriced food. once you got more than a mile out on a hiking trail, things improved. I'll throw another vote to Lisbon. We went to Porto a year later, but it wasn't as good. |
Tofino, out on the far coast of Vancouver Island in Canada. It's small. There are lodges and some rental places, but it has a very remote vibe. The crashing waves are omnipresent, day and night. During storm season, it is even more thunderous. You can lose yourself in the primalness of it. Tidal pools, orca, giant trees. Wildness. |
Western China. Specifically Yunnan and Sichuan. Not at all like coastal China. |
