So will Jones Beach do the trick? Or another town not too far away?

100% skip Jones Beach. The only reason to go there is for the water. You’re going to be in Hauppauge, which is smack dab in the middle of the island. There are some “charming” towns nearby that may be closer to the vibe you’re looking for. Smithtown is the closest. If you want something that looks at water, but doesn’t require water activities, then maybe Northport, Stony Brook Village, or Port Jefferson.

Northport village would be great option as its only 2. Cute, waterfront, shops, cafes, and very safe.

It's not Jones then. If no time for FireI,
drop them off at the closest subway for them to explore to get to Coney Island where they will see teens (for good or bad) or elsewhere in the city.

To put it in perspective, central Long Island to Coney Island is, like, a 2 hour train ride one way.

Thanks!

If this is about killing time the afternoon/evening of arrival before the tournament starts, I'd plan to stop somewhere in Brooklyn or Queens en route. There's really not much that the middle of LI has to offer by way of cool vibes. But if it's for the afternoon on your first full day there, I'd take the towns that a pp suggested above.
