Why am I so upset? I really don't understand it. I think it might be because I might fall away from church and this "church family" if the new paster doesn't measure up to this one. I also suspect that no other will measure up because this current one is quite gifted.

Anyway, curious if others have experienced this.
(and please be nice).

Maybe you liked the religious resurgence that you felt and are now suspecting that it was mainly a positive reaction to this particular pastor.

Also -- you should know that it's not at all unusual for churches to have great changes in membership whenever there's a clergy transition.

Helpful. I joined this church during a transition; liked the former and new but I wasn't really into the church back then.

Are you more "into the church" than religious? Do you like the camaraderie more than you believe in the tenets of the religion? Tough questions, but now is the time to think about them.

These are simple questions, not tough ones.

They may be tough for OP

At a church I used to be a member of the founding pastor left for a bigger and better situation. Even though he was replaced by a good pastor, the loss that dedicated members felt was profound. It's been years and people still talk about it. I think this is normal.

+!. Christianity was started by a sort of founding pastor, Jesus Christ, who people are still talking about.

No, Christianity was started by the Son of God.

The church was started by the Holy Spirit and the 12 apostles on Pentacost.

The first church sermon was given by Peter that day.

The above is what Christians believe. People of other religions and people of no religion don't believe that.

Yes. When you find a church with a pastor who speaks to your spiritual needs and one whose sermons give you food for thought and he/she moves on it's like losing a member of your family.

I have been through it twice and the new pastors never measured up. I hope it will be better for you.

Op here,

Been away. Thanks for those of you who were kind. I've decided to join the selection committee to ensure that the family aspect that this paster brought into the church, remains.

To those wondering if I like the community or the Church, I have a personal relationship with God so yes, I join the Church for the community and the spiritual guidance of somebody I can trust. I was raised Catholic so trust is important. So many pastors seem manipulative which some might see as charming; huge turn-off.

Great idea to join the selection committee. Keep us posted.

+1. That kind of service to the church will help strengthen your ties, strengthen you spiritually, and as a side bonus for you will help you feel more connected to whoever the committee picks.

I pray you all have an uncontentious selection process.

I was once on a search committee. It did not strengthen me spiritually. It did make me feel more connected to the new pastor.

Contention is the whole point of the selection process, isn't it? To deal with the contention within the committee, so it has less effect on the whole church.
