Personal training for teen DS

Very different. A kid with no experience can get seriously injured, develop really poor form which lays a foundation for future injury, get sucked into the manosphere, receive endless marketing for expensive supplements he does not need… the list goes on.

None of my children got stylists. All of them got trainers to work with until they understood what they were doing. In gyms that had healthy cultures, not steroid shops. Then they transitioned to working out independently or with friends at the gym, and also at home using their own body weight for resistance.

To the OP— you are on the right track. Ignore the noise.

While I don’t share the manosphere or steroid shop concerns, I agree that correct form is important. My DS took some weightlifting classes at 14 and 15. At 16 he’s pretty good at going to the gym on his own. But DH and I occasionally spot check him for form and his coaches in his sport does the same.

Good to know! Is there a specific trainer your son works with that he likes? Thank you for the recommendation!

I completely disagree w/ this. I am a PP who suggested a trainer my boys had used years ago. Part of why we got him was b/c when watching my kids (who had been instructed in the weight room in a team group at school and from youtube videos), it was clear they had a lot of incorrect form. They also seemed to be doing exercises that weren't effective for what they wanted. A few sessions with the trainer was worth everything to me, as I no longer had a huge fear of them getting hurt, and they were able to focus on improving what they wanted to prior to tryouts. It really made it all safer and more efficient.

Ick

They are going to be 19 when they graduate?

Yes, my neighbor’s kid will be 19 when he graduates. My kid will be 17 when he graduates and they’re almost the same age (my kid is a month younger and a year ahead). It’s weird. It happens though.

+1 and then they are 23 when they complete college!

Obviously OP’s son was redshirted for sports purposes. Lame.

Not obviously. My neighbor’s kid (who will be 19 when he graduates) was held back from starting K because he was too immature/not ready and the district they lived in had a June cut off date. So, at that time, it wasn’t a big deal. Times changed, they moved districts and now the age difference is notable.

People do it for different reasons and only sometimes is it for athletics.
