I take a cheap Amazon fire tablet which I use to read e- books, download travel guided and to connect to WiFi at the hotel. It's pretty light but a bigger screen to do these things than a phone. |
Get an Android tablet. You can download and store on it unlike an ipad. |
Agree with this take. 99% of the time I'm taking my laptop for personal reasons. One time I was searching for coveted seats to open up on a flight, and it would have been so much harder to jump on that with just my tablet/phone. |
I'm travelling right now with just a small iPad and smartphone. This works. |
Depends on your company. My work
Computer’s VPN will Only authenticate to US-based networks, and in Europe I pay for international phone data so won’t be using it as a hot spot. We are on the run during the day and resting or eating otherwise. I wouldn’t have time to donate time to my job, especially if they forbid me to work. |
It's useful to have a personal laptop for planning and reserving things. |
I'm really surprised by these responses. Do people not have personal laptops? |
I would not work at all on this trip if you don't have to. Enjoy it.
I only bring my laptop if I have to work. Otherwise, if not working, a smartphone and Ipad with keyboard work just fine for most tasks. |
Op here. Thanks for the replies. I don't own a tablet as my previous job basically tethered me to a laptop at all times so there was never a point to a separate device. Maybe I'll get one but probably not before I leave on Wednesday. |
I have one but aside maybe from watching a movie I don’t see the benefit in lugging it around on vacation. |
I’m doing a long complicated trip. You don’t need a laptop. You really can do it all on a phone. iPad would be nice at times. I bring a personal laptop on driving trips, but it’s one more thing to carry on the plane. |
I always bring mine but mostly it is to check in on work, or to work on the plane back. But I don't have out of country restrictions since I have to travel outside the US for work anyway. My DH usually doesn't bring a laptop on vacation trips. |
We have our iPhones - and an iPad for videos.
To protect company intellectual property, work laptops are never allowed on vacation and are only rarely taken on overseas work trips. |
Desktop at home. Laptop is for work. |
I take mine on photography trips but not family trips. For family trips, my Nikon z7 can hold 1500 pics shot in raw, and if I am going to fill that up I am probably not paying enough attention to my kids! |
