Homicides in 2025: NYC 118, Baltimore 59, DC 75

While you're waiting, try to think why that's at all relevant to the situation in DC, which is what this thread is about. Yes, I know several of the southern states have the worst murder rates (DC is even worse), but it's not like Maryland and Illinois are much better. Then states like Wyoming and NH have among the lowest murder rates, but they're also joined by MA and VT. What do states like WY, NH, MA, and VT have in common? Same question applies to states like LA, MS, AL, and MO.

A lot needs to happen there!

The elected officials are all crap for allowing this.

There's one big difference between Boston and DC....

What is that (what is the difference)?

Poor people, no education, no hope, generational poverty. I lived in the hood when I first moved here. Conflict is what they are engaged every waking hour. The ones who would like to get out, don't have the money. They live in stress, anger. Gave me anxiety.
I didn't even mention mental health/SN. Crime is the norm.
Super messed up, but it was created by society, politics, history.
Poor in US, any race, seem more messed up that many other places.

Social programs, welfare, free health care, education is supposed to relieve the stress and help lift people up, but it doesn’t seem to be working in D.C.

Welfare programs don't work. People (mostly) don't commit crime because they are poor, they commit crime because they are mentally ill, impulsive, or have a mental disability. Unfortunately, social services are very not effective at reducing crime. The most effective thing at reducing crime is incarceration for repeat offenders. People can't commit crimes and harm the general public when they are in prison.

DC defines “juvenile offender” as age TWENTY FIVE (25) and below.

- no jail time
- probation
- “released under the recognizance of their parents” (or just let go, to re-offend later that day or week).

Anyone working to repeal this?

It’s a good start. I hope they pump those numbers up!!

This is such a copout answer. Boston has a higher share of the population living under the federal poverty line than DC.

Red states have the most crime. For cities, it is the blue cities that usually have the most crime, but most cities are blue so I’m not sure what you can draw from that stat?

I wonder how much of this is domestic murder.

More context.

Chicago has 166 murders so far this year and 2.7 million people. If Chicago had DC’s population they’d have 240+ murders.

Las Vegas has 38 murders in 2025 and 660,000 people.

Philadelphia has 101 murders in 2025 and 1.5 million people.

For people saying DC is safe; safe compared to where? Compared to St Louis, sure, but we should be aiming higher. The nation’s capital shouldn’t be dramatically more unsafe than Chicago and Philadelphia.

When we start comparing DC’s murder rate to Western capitals it’s equally bleak. London has 24 murders this year and 8 million people.

That’s not what the statistic show

You look good cities are in murder you have New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis.

You really wanna understand the issue you should watch “three strikes you’re out” which is the documentary on how policy there’s thought to put more people in jail and lower crime actually increased crime.

Baltimore decreased their murder rate by 40+ percent. They do it by community engagement and social services.

https://mayor.baltimorecity.gov/sites/default/files/Baltimore%20City%20Comprehensive%20Violence%20Prevention%20Plan.pdf

Mayor Scott is the guy who got that bridge rebuilt so quickly. If you’re watching the news when that happened, you did the press conferences.
