You really wanna understand the issue you should watch “three strikes you’re out” which is the documentary on how policy there’s thought to put more people in jail and lower crime actually increased crime.

Baltimore decreased their murder rate by 40+ percent. They do it by community engagement and social services.

Mayor Scott is the guy who got that bridge rebuilt so quickly. If you’re watching the news when that happened, you did the press conferences.

Baltimore's murder/crime rate plummeted once the incompetent, venal, corrupt state's attorney was deposed.

100% this.

DC residents voted for this. Let them have what they voted for.

There's one big difference between Boston and DC....

What is that (what is the difference)?

Poor people, no education, no hope, generational poverty. I lived in the hood when I first moved here. Conflict is what they are engaged every waking hour. The ones who would like to get out, don't have the money. They live in stress, anger. Gave me anxiety.
I didn't even mention mental health/SN. Crime is the norm.
Super messed up, but it was created by society, politics, history.
Poor in US, any race, seem more messed up that many other places.

You think there’s no poor people with generational poverty in Boston?!?!?! AYFKM???

You think THAT is the distinction between DC and Boston?

Red states have the most crime. For cities, it is the blue cities that usually have the most crime, but most cities are blue so I’m not sure what you can draw from that stat?

What you can draw from it is that crime is a blue-voter demographic phenomenon, even in red states. Red states have blue cities, and those blue cities are responsible for nearly all the crime in those red states.

You hate the fact that social services and community engagement lowered crime.

Shame on you.

Boston is willing to have a hamsterland, DC is not. Are you going to have a hamster land?

It’s also called opioid row … do you want that?

What you can draw from that is you’re just comparing blue cities to blue cities why don’t you try to compare blue to red. Cause when we do red has a lot more murders and don’t get me started about suicides.

Chicago has 166 murders so far this year and 2.7 million people. If Chicago had DC’s population they’d have 240+ murders.

Las Vegas has 38 murders in 2025 and 660,000 people.

Philadelphia has 101 murders in 2025 and 1.5 million people.

For people saying DC is safe; safe compared to where? Compared to St Louis, sure, but we should be aiming higher. The nation’s capital shouldn’t be dramatically more unsafe than Chicago and Philadelphia.

When we start comparing DC’s murder rate to Western capitals it’s equally bleak. London has 24 murders this year and 8 million people.

In London people do not have the right own guns. And the people that own guns are highly regulated.. do you want that?

New York City has gun laws that are just as restrictive as DC and has 5-7 times less murders per capita than DC. How do you explain that?

And Switzerland has the most relaxed gun laws in Europe and Geneva and Bern are MUCH safer than London so it’s not all about gun laws.

The whole "root causes" explanation does not pass factual study. In the 1990s, murders in New York City plummeted by 70 percent while poverty actually *increased*. If poverty causes crime, then why is the USA's per-capita murder rate roughly on par with that of Madagascar, where 70 percent of the population lives in poverty compared with only around 11 percent here.

Once you understand that crime *causes* poverty and not the other way around, you will see things in the correct light. The only way to lower the violent crime rate is by focusing on the offenders who repeatedly commit violent crime. The authorities know who these people are. Mosby -- who is a convicted criminal, need I remind you -- also knew who those people were but did nothing to stop them. She set Baltimore back decades, all by herself.

I have no effs to give when it comes to suicide, I care a lot about being able to feel safe in my neighborhood.

It’s absolutely insane that my comment got removed, but it certainly proves the point I was making.

Why sit here and complain about crime, when it's so much easier to move? I live in a safe suburb and stay out of DC.

There are poor people in every city. In many cities there are many poor immigrants who come here with nothing but trauma and even they don’t commit crimes like the urban folks here. We should all stop making excuses for these people “oh but they’re poor and their parents were poor, what do you expect” and actually hold them all accountable to basic standards. When you hold people accountable, they will change their behavior. When you make excuses for them, they won’t.

Exactly right. This realization as I've become older, borne out of years of observations living in DC, has shifted my political loyalties more towards the center than they were before.
