With massive ICE sweeps nationwide, why don't we hear of arrests or fining of the business owners?

Anonymous
As a business owner who follows the correct steps/system in place for hiring, what more do you want from us?

I make new hires fill out an I-9 form and use eVerify. New hires either have to show me a US Passport or US driver's license and social security card.

If I'm following the correct steps and undocumented workers are giving me fake papers, how should I know since they look like mine and feel like mine.

I mean, it seems to me that the big gap in the system is the I9 form being accepted and the eVerify system. If those are the 2 government systems in place to keep undocumented from working and neither returns a "do not hire" or "undocumented" then what more can I do?

A business owner who hires unauthorized workers isn't a (criminal/civil) problem, per se. A business owner who hires unauthorized workers and then pays below minimum wage and violates workers' rights laws, that is the crimnal/civil problem.

Well, you can't start by not voting from the candidate who campaigned on the slogan "Mass Deportations Now" because if you thought that wasn't going to touch YOUR workforce you are either (a) stupid; (b) have your head in the sand; or (c) both.

And guess what, a lot of the immigrants being hauled off in handcuffs now also thought they had done everything "right" and were guilty of nothing more than a civil infraction of having their paperwork out of order on some technicality. ICE is going after those folks and minors in foster care whose parents brought them over here because they are too chicken to actually engage with any potentially violent real criminals. Why have we seen no raids on gang houses that result in gunfights from these hardened MS-13 types, or anything along those lines? No, they'd rather go after the 55 year old hotel housekeeper who didn't turn in a form in 2018 because she moved apartments and never got the notice, but then she goes to the immigration court to fix it and they put her in shackles.

Business owners like you know what you are doing. You just choose to look the other way because it benefits you, and we all know it.

This is what I think too. Also, there is a huge element of racism.
The idea of white people going to jail in error isn’t popular.

I don’t know. What would you do differently if you thought that you might go to jail if you hired an undocumented employee?

Are you ok? Where in anything I posted did I say I seek out undocumented workers? Or that i voted for Trump? Or that I underpay my workers?

The original post asked why businesses aren't being fined or owners arrested. I was replying to that. It is 100% possible that you have an undocumented employee who used fake paperwork. I'm saying, if it looks legit and feels legit, and more importantly, nothing happens when the I-9 is submitted or eVerify is completed, what more does the public want from business owners? I-9s and eVerify are supposed to be the government systems to stop undocumented workers. Are these systems not working? Why not?

Of course you would say that. You hate to be proven wrong.
Take a random name from one of the links and google it. They absolutely exist and they are horrible people.

OP here. I don’t know that I want anything more from you, personally. It’s more that you hear stories of ICE going to the Home Depot or whatever and arresting day laborers. Why don’t we hear about them arresting people who were hiring from the Home Depot parking lot?
You can’t tell me that these folks had passports and went through e-verify.

Social Security notifies employers that the workers have provided incorrect forms. The employers are told not to assume the workers are illegal.

This should be shifted and no-match letters should be sent telling them not to hire until their data is corrected.

I have no scaffolding for this information. Can you explain more? This sounds really interesting.

c'mon people.. this is the answer.

Most illegal immigrants work in the agriculture, construction and hospitality industries, and most of those business owners are R.

Even Trump's hotels rely on illegal immigrant labor. Is ICE going to arrest his sons?

The detention centers are being paid a lot of money per detainee. So there's a need to keep them supplied with detainees.

Arresting business owners wouldn't help meet the quota of detainees.

All this tells me that every once in a blue moon ICE arrests someone who actually does have a criminal record. So far for FY 25 in looking at the arrest data, for supposedly targeting "violent criminals" only 2.5% of the people being arrested and detained by ICE had any kind of criminal record whatsoever. Compare that to the general populace where close to 1 in 3 Americans has been arrested or had a conviction of some kind. They are even less criminal than the average American.
