Xanax dosage for flying

Anonymous
I’m the same height and weight as your dh and .5 mg of Xanax puts me to sleep within about 30 minutes. I would absolutely not drive a car on it. He really needs to trial it before the trip to see how he reacts and please don’t drive.

^ thank you, just checked - his dosage is .5 mg.

he did a rental car for his motion sickness but if he's out of it, I can drive instead.

I’ll have to check dosage given - he was prescribed only 4 pills.

NP. I too suffer anxiety in advance of and during flying. My script is also small. I take 1/2 of a 0.25 pill the night before, and the other half at the airport. I have the container just in case with me.

Xanax has a half-life of 11 hours. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538165/

He should not drive a car after taking Xanax and is going to need another solution for transportation on the other end.

I take 1 mg about an hour before flight. I arrive after a 3 hour flight ready to drive from the airport to my kids house (45 minute drive) and play with my grandkids until bedtime. My flight arrives at 12:55 pm. And yes, I’m older, 70.

He’s been prescribed Xanax for upcoming flight. He has physical symptoms (heart palpitations & cold sweats) just thinking about it. Dr said no to beta blockers (with asthma)

He’s thinking taking 1/2 pill before driving to airport (2hrs prior) then 1 pill when boarded.
He is 5’9 , 160lb - does this timing sound right?

After 4 hr flight, he has to drive rental car.

What happened on flight? Have you considered working with one of those airline pilots who do the fear of flying course? I would also check turbulence reports to give you an idea where you may experience some so you don’t freak out when. it happens. I also would sheets early morning fligbt because they are less bumpy.

It was turbulence for 2+ hrs and his dramamine never kicked in - was awful even for me.

I'll look into the fear of flying airline course.

He had a couple of hypnosis sessions (somewhat helpful) and listens to mediation podcasts.

PP back to recommend downloading Weightless by Marconi Union! There is a 10 hour version and it’s not pseudoscience - it is considered the most relaxing song ever recorded and was done with this objective!

He might find the half pill is enough. I only use a whole one if it is a red eye and it is long enough to sleep four hours - otherwise I don’t sleep.

you should definitely drive after, not him

You are not supposed to xanex before driving, not even a few hours before driving. Talk to a doctor or have him take uber. If he gets into a accident while on xanex you have a much bigger issue on your hands.

The rental car on landing will get him in trouble with employer, rental company. Insurance. He really needs scared flyer therapy (a thing) or not to travel on business.

The first couple of times I took Xanax .25 mg dose, I felt like I was going to stop breathing because I was so sedated. He definitely should try it a couple of times before he flies so he can figure out how much he needs and how long it will affect him. I’d say no to driving - better plan on uber or taxi. And, fly as much as possible - that’s the one thing that helped with my phobia. I went from not flying once in a ten year period to making 10-12 trips a year, including several 12 hour plus flights. Exposure therapy + anxiety meds works!

Good luck to your husband. As someone else with flight anxiety ( though mine is caused by claustrophobia) just wanted to add one thing that has really helped— I make sure to pick a an aisle seat. No more flying Southwest— it just adds to my anxiety to not have my preselected seat waiting for me.

He cannot take Xanax and drive! Especially if he's never taken it before. That's a good way to kill himself or someone else.
