| We pay $150 an hour for a math tutor who is a teacher at a private school |
| We pay $165/hr for a former teacher who was head of the math department. It feels very expensive but has really helped our kid. |
| Outschool - It’s virtual and really affordable. Just search the offerings and instructor’s qualifications for the level you’re looking for |
| We pay $100/hour for a teacher to come to our home once a week. |
| OP, if your kid is driven enough and you are short on funds, you can drive DC to your local Kumon. |
Kumon is okay for lower ES and your child is very motivated. There’s a lot of repetition which can be good for standardized testing but if your child needs lots of instructions, you may need a 1:1 tutor. Mathnasium may be a little bit better. However, if you’re looking for tutoring beyond Algebra, a tutor or more intense classes like RSM or AoPS are better. |
| 125 an hour- tutor can do advanced math, advanced science and language. This is the going rate in NVA for any of the center based tutors |
| Is this stuff not all free on YouTube?? |
They are all from other countries so it’s a good rate for them but it was calc, math and Spanish. Math is a math major grad, Spanish is a Spanish teacher in their country and English is someone who just enjoys it but she’s been great with writing and reading assignments and she’s extremely well read. It’s great as we can do as often as needed and not worry about the cost. You have to weed through the profiles carefully. We had a shady Spanish tutor who changed her fees after a few sessions but we changed and the new one was great. |
|
I have a recent grad and we did private K-12th.
We didn’t do any tutoring. I can’t imagine spending what we spent on tuition and then needing a tutor. |
This is going to blow your mind, but I live in a neighborhood that's 50-50 private/public, and nearly ALL the kids get tutors at some point, regardless of where they go to school. Some of it remedial and some of it is stabilization to stay ahead. The truth is that most wealth parents get tutors for their kids. Tutoring is a function of wealth, not academics. |
| What are you paying your day school for, if not to teach your kids?! |
The number of kids using tutors at our kid’s private school was one of the real surprising things I learned the first year they were there. That and the number of kids with private college counselors. |
I am confused. You employ them at $45000/year? |
|
Use youtube for free or if you must, get a tutor from the Baltics. They know the knew math, but also remember the old one. They charge 20-30 euros max over zoom. Some of them have their own free videos on youtube.
Ask them to teach your child based on age/ability. You don't want the stuff she is already learning. She can always ask for help with homework ofcourse. |
