What are you paying for outside tutoring?

My DC expressed an interest in getting a math tutor this summer because "all of my friends have them." That's mostly true, but I just looked up the pretty basic tutoring center where her closest 2 friends go. It's $138/hour for the least expensive tutor.

I feel so naive and stuck in 1998. I was expecting maybe $75/hour. Her friend has a sibling and they both go to tutoring one a week. I can't imagine paying $1200+/month in addition to private school tuition, but now I'm realizing that the vast majority of her classmates' families are doing just that. We are in a nice neighborhood so maybe higher commercial rents are skewing things, but there are plenty of empty storefronts and offices so that doesn't explain it.

What is normal in your area or at your school? Help me adjust my expectations to reality.

Some kids do well with MUCH cheaper tutors, OP. There are online tutors in lower COL states that you can get for $50 an hour, or sometimes even less. The question is whether your kid has the temperament to benefit from such tutoring. I paid/pay for expensive Prep Matters tutors for my kids because I didn't want to bother with the cheaper hit and miss tutors.

I think of it this way: I deliberately moved and invested in real estate to get my kids into good public schools. I can afford my mortgage and expensive tutors and extra-curricular activities for my kids, given that I'm not paying for private K-12.

Sorry, but you’re also paying in opportunity cost of your kids’ time.

Either do online tutoring or even better get a kid and pay them (Cheaper and same results academically).

We found a Spanish tutor on Wyzant for $60/hr. He’d near us so we do in person sessions. He also teaches ES math for the same rate.

When we were searching, we found Math, English, and Science tutors with rates between $50-$125/hr, depending on the subject, level, and in-personal/virtual. If your child can handle virtual tutoring, the rates are much lower. The experience levels vary significantly so you have to do your diligence.

For someone with a masters in teaching, classroom experience, and experience with learning disabilities: $90/hr.

Specialty tutoring centers for children with dyslexia are running around $125/hr.

$75/hr for an experienced tutor. She provides tutoring services at our daughter's school, and at our home during school holidays.

Wow $75 an hour is crazy I never did tutoring for my kid but I would’ve thought it was $15 an hour or something.

Who are you getting who is satisfied with getting a cut of $10-20 per hour?

We pay over 100 per hour for a tutor that knows our child, their learning style, and offers flexibility in terms of meeting our child near their school and scheduling extra sessions around important tests without charging more.
Sure, there are cheaper options. But we are happy with what we pay and receive in return.

We employ a retired teacher for most of our tutoring needs. They make 45k per year plus annual bonus, and work 15-30 hours per week.
