If you have a left exit, and you don't feel comfortable going at "left lane" speeds, you should be in the left lane for one mile - MAX. 1/2 is plenty, in moving traffic. I think a lot of people just don't know how to drive - they don't know how to check their mirrors to gauge flow of traffic. You should be checking your mirrors every couple of seconds all the time.
