Freshman boys team at one of the huge publixs

FYI -- Many coaches have already scoped out the area's middle schoolers (camps, tournaments, AAU teams) and may have already "recruited" some players including transfers. When my son was in 7th grade, a head coach approached me after a camp to express interest in my son (experienced AAU player) and asked if he would consider transferring to his school, into a legit HS program (not the homeless BS). He did legitimately transfer and started on JV.

Was this a private school?

I know it happens because I have seen it. But, its so unfair to the 2800+ kids at the mega publics to have coaches telling more kids to transfer in to take spots on the team. Basketball teams are so small already! The public schools need to shut down all these BS 'language' or IB/AP transfers. Kids can move into a school zone if they want to attend that school. Or, they can play at the school where they live.

This is not a thing anymore, as of this year. Kids lose a year of eligibility.

Nope, fcps still has the widely used loopholes of foreign language and ap/ib. So pp's kid applied for a transfer based on one of those two things (but really, to play basketball for a "better" coach and with the promise of JV).

PP. Yes this is still legit because students can transfer for academic reasons to attend a "better" school or participate in other extracurriculars. They are not outwardly transferring for sports. My son transferred in to a lower-rated academic school to play basketball while others transferred in to his zoned school to play other sports. Two of my friends transferred their daughters into different schools for Arts programs--one for theater and chorus and the other for band.

As it turns out, my son's zoned school also had transfers in who played basketball so his home school team would have been a good competitive option as well, but he preferred playing for the other school and coaches, and with his friends. Doesn't matter--he's been playing for years, trains daily, and he would have easily made either school team (and no, he's probably not interested in playing in college--just for fun and the love of the game).

Going into next year, this is not a thing in FCPS. You will have to sit out. The IB/AP loophole is closed.

Rule applies to transfers in and out of high schools, after starting high school, not kids enrolling in a high school for the first time, to take an IB program for example or to attend TJ.

28A-7-A – Transfer Rule – The student shall not have enrolled in one high school and subsequently transferred to and enrolled in another high school without a corresponding change in the residence of his/her parents, parent, or guardian.

What school system allows kids to transfer from their zoned schools for reasons like sports, theater?

I've known of Fairfax HS students transferring into schools for dance programs (only a few HS offer dance), AP music classes, orchestras and especially better theater programs. Like athletes, they are want better experiences and exposure in the arts for college and career.

This is not an approved reason for transferring.

Are you eligible if you move into the school zone? Or do all new students have to sit out a year?

Yes eligible. The rule applies to athletes who try to transfer for sports after starting high school. It prevents coaches from trying to poach players from other school team.

A “transfer” isn’t the right word in this case for anyone, athletes included, who just wants to attend another high school for academic, extracurricular or sports reasons.

The kids all know who isn't supposed to be at the school they are attending. The only people who don't know anything about it are FCPS admin apparently.
