How many do they take?

That was my son last summer. He didn’t make the freshman team. I’m not sure exactly how many kids tried out…but there were a lot. The last day of tryouts they only had the top 20 kids come and my son made that cut. But not the eventual cut to 14. My son was one of 5 of the summer league kids didn’t make the team.

Don't know the whole situation but I've found out over the last 9 months, there are a lot of politics involved in basketball.
You never know everything involved and who knows who. Just have your son keep practing and doing his best because you never know when you will meet or come across someone or some place you can go.

Our friends with older boys told us some coaches have been tracking upcoming players in the area either watching local travel or AAU games via word of mouth or especially if they run summer basketball camps. Showing up for tryouts without prior exposure may be too late.

A lot of sports tryouts are a crap shoot if the coaches have no prior knowledge unless a boy is tall or super athletic. The few really tall/ athletic or talented players will stand out but that middle pack will run together.

Its FCPS public high school. They may be "tracking" whoever at tournaments, but you get to choose from who is in your school boundary who shows up for 9th grade. At least the scrupulous coaches.

How many kids usually try out for the freshman boys teams?

This is true. My kid at a large DMV area public found out he’s make the HS team in April of 8th grade year. Played summer league with a couple of other freshmen the coaches all knew.

100 kids showed up for freshman/JV tryouts.

My kid at a large FCPS HS said around 50 freshman boys tried out last year. 12-13 were picked.

At most bigger FCPS schools that have some semblance of decent sports programs (think of your Madison's, Woodson's, Robinson's, South Lakes', Westfields, etc.), you can usually count on 75-100 kids showing up to tryouts. At those schools, if your son isn't a solid FCPS player or taller/athletic, your chance of making the team in general drops, and the chance of any playing time if he does make it drops dramatically.
