DOJ civil rights probe into TJ admissions policies

Wouldn't the SB have to work with VDOE on that? It's a state year round Governor's School, not just an FCPS school.

Unless their goal is to shutter TJ.

This. Trump does not care about Asian.
But he has interest in shutter the elite and higher education that creates more of critical thinker, because it is a threat to power.

Yeah - I too see this as a naked vote grab and overall it's pointless exercise with no tangible schooling outcomes expected.

Exactly.

We have bigger issues. Just get rid of it.

That said, I'm tired of distractions from what's actually important - giving our kids the highest quality education possible.

Like, let's make sure we're teaching primary grade kids how to read and stuffing young brains with facts, teaching middle schoolers how to reason, and giving high schoolers opportunities to excel.

The bolded is not part of a “highest quality education possible.”

Teaching facts is a pretty important part of education.

They should just close TJ down.

Agree.

Why do you agree that TJ should shut down? There are Governors schools all over the state, why should the only Governors school in our area close down? Should Fairfax have to pay taxes to the state to support all of the other schools and not have even one school for our own students?

Because the constant attack from Republicans is detracting from our kids receiving an education.

If the racists world stop being racist, the criticism would stop but then you world get criticism from people that think there aren't enough non-Asians at TJ.

NP. I don’t think it should be shut down but I’m so sick of republicans pulling this garbage while we foot the tax bill to fight it and our kids suffer diminished funds for education in favor of legal battles.

FCPS could just stop being racist.

People like you felt the same way about all the desegregation efforts after brown v board.

Such a waste of educational resources, why won't they just accept our racist policies instead of legally challenging them?!?!?

The woke left have been aching to destroy places like TJ, Stuyvesant' and Lowell for years. They are sick of having model minority success thrown in their face whenever they want to blame everything on white supremacy. You can have quite supremacy and model monitor achievement at the same time but then you have to acknowledge that some minorities are trying harder than others.

Why is the TJ admissions process so secretively opaque? Why can't it be more transparent, similar to the DMV driver’s permit process, where the evaluation criteria, practice tests, and behind-the-wheel requirements are publicly available to all individuals? Any individual willing to put in the effort to "learn and demonstrate knowledge & skills" can earn the permit, regardless of ethnicity.

And what the school board hurriedly changing the admissions process in the middle of a pandemic to take advantage of George Floyd in 2020 is purely based on helping with schooling outcomes!

Now the shoe is on the other foot. Good!

It has never been possible and will never be possible for TJ to admit every kid capable of doing well there who wants to attend.

How does this impact next year's admissions process? Should students prepare for just the essay or will they be tested in middle school math, science and English?

Maybe they could get rid of experience factors and go back to an objective test. Keeping the 1.5% seat allocation will ensure that every middle school has representation at the school every jurisdiction funds with taxes.

TJ was great for decades. It is still great. What has changed is the political climate because of right wing media and the constant use of children in culture wars- gay rights bans, transgender bathroom/sports bans, book bans, ban on teaching African American history, TJ admissions process challenges, public school funding reductions, etc etc. A certain party is trying to dismantle not only TJ but public education in general. But most parents are too stupid and too busy fighting among and forgetting the bigger picture.

The culture wars are not the bigger picture. Politics isn't even the bigger picture (it is, after all, downstream from culture).

The bigger picture is solving problems needed to live a good daily life.

Most parents simply want their children to receive a high-quality education without the influence of political or ideological agendas being introduced into the classroom.
