Timothy Dalton has very romantic clips like a Mr Darcy, so that adaptation has my vote. Shall we talk about how Alan Rickman would have been perfect in that role?

John Hurt is an English man. You're thinking of William Hurt.
Love Alan Rickman. Rochester embodies BDE which is why she picks him!

I love Alan Rickman, but he is not masculine or imposing enough to be Mr. Rochester.

I am of the opinion that you cannot have enough versions of Jane Eyre! It’s my favorite book and I love all the different interpretations. It’s high time for another movie to come out!

That said, I love love love the 2006 BBC miniseries. Having 4 episodes really gave the story time to breathe and you really get to know the characters and places.

My least favorite was the 2011 Fessbender movie. I felt the acting was subpar. It was like watching a table read.

I just rewatched it last night thanks to this thread. I had forgotten how perfect it was.

It is on Roku now.

Ive only seen the one with Samantha Morton, and I didn't care for it.

I LOVE Samantha Morton in general though.

It might be the telling of the story.

Jane Eyre can run the risk of being tto much of a fantasy melodrama. Abused stepchild, scary csstle, crazy pyromanic wife locked up in the attic. I think that it might be a fine line to walk when putting it to script and film.

The 2006 BBC miniseries did it to perfection. The storytelling, cinematography, script and characters are all done to perfection, especially the way that the director, writers and actors made the story seem real and plausible.

The chemistry between the actors was really fantastic. I need to watch this again!

Yes, this was the best even though I agree that Charlotte Gainsbourg was the most true to the book. There was a sexual chemistry in this one that was lacking in all the others. And it was the first one where I could really see Mr Rochester's point of view and feel compassion for him. "I want a wife, Jane." He had been lonely being tied to a lunatic for life. He was attracted to Jane's stillness and calmness because he just wanted peace and companionship.

Totally agree.

Their relationship felt very real.

I also really liked how St. John Rivers was portrayed in this one. He made sense, instead of being out of the blue, and was actually quite likeable. They had chemistry too. Not sexual chemistry, but friend/sibling chemistry.
