Inspired by the Pride & Prejudice thread, who are your favorite Jane Eyre and Mr Rochester?
My vote goes to Mia Wasikowska ja Fassssbender. 2011 version is a gorgeous movie. I grew up with the 80s BBC miniseries with Timothy Dalton and, of course, I loved the story, but from a grown me perspective - Timothy Dalton is far too hot to have that Jane as a match. Sorry, I'll show myself out now, for being so incredibly superficial. |
Agree on Mia W and Fassbender! Loved this version so much. I've seen the Joan Fontaine/Orson Welles one many times and I like the black and white film and the many shadows and dark parts of the house but I think this one captures the story very well. |
Jane was supposed to be plain and mousy.
Rochester was supposed to be an imposing, rich playboy type. I think she was appropriately plain and nondescript for the role (80s Jane) |
I loved the BBC Miniseries the best. I loved Mr Rochester in this one. Jane might have been a little too pretty, but they did a good job making her more plain in the movie.

Fassbender was great. Really made Rochester that bit menacing where you get a bit worried for Jane.
I always struggle with the ending a bit. He was so awful to her and she still marries him anyway. |
+1 Toby Stephens had a wonderful intensity, while Ruth Wilson best captured Jane’s looks and gumption. Their chemistry together was marvelous. |
Is this available on prime? |
She spent her whole life being abused. When you consider that, Mr. Rochester is a step up. |
Yes and she didn't like the one guy she was with for a while--(was he a missionary or something?) he was too much like a brother/safe. She had a deeper connection to Rochester. They were really both broken people. |
Forgot about this one. Very good too. |
Is the young Jane in this one Lucy from Narnia? |
Mine is Charlotte Gainbourg, always. She totally embodies the "Jane your serious little face" vibe from the book. She's so still, as Jane was written.

That's the 1996 version: James Hurt, Joan Plowright, Anna Paquin in it too. ![]() |
I think I watched in on Hulu. I'm not sure where it is now. |
Because of this thread I watched the Timothy Dalton one and am now trying to watch the version with John Hurt. It is hard to believe him as an Englishman. Timothy Dalton has very romantic clips like a Mr Darcy, so that adaptation has my vote. Shall we talk about how Alan Rickman would have been perfect in that role? |
