Just coming here to say that. The SDI was nicknamed "Star Wars" and was a missile defense system that aimed to develop a space-based defense system to protect the U.S. from ballistic missile attacks, using technologies like lasers, satellites, and interceptors. Long story short, the program faced technical and financial challenges and no fully operational system was ever deployed. I'm sure Trump's "Golden Dome" will end the same way as Star Wars, especially given the utter incompetence of his government.

The problem to be solved is totally different. Iron Dome was designed to stop primitive short range rocket fire from a small defined area (Gaza and its roughly 40 mile long border with Israel). Golden Dome needs to protect the entire border of the US (over 100,000 miles) against sophisticated missiles, including ICBMs and hypersonics, that could be launched from multiple points, including mainland Russia or China as well as from the sea or from the air. If Trump thinks it is remotely the same, he is a moron.

Why is it pointless? Is a 50 percent chance of preventing an atomic bomb from detonating over a city not worth an investment?

I'm sorry, but this is one area where Obama was dead wrong.

A missile defense system can be built and be upgraded over time. Just because technology currently favors the attacker doesn't mean it always will. There was a time when politicians said "the bomber will always get through." That was 100 years ago.
