| To be fair reports initially did say pirate ship because it looked like a party boat with people up in the sales dressed in stripes, lights on the sails, etc. That was quickly changed in the media, of course, but there were several posts all over X talking about the pirate ship. |
Do pirates dress a certain way? I am really getting tired of all the piratephoia on this board. |
That was my first thought. A power outage does not alter basic geometry conflicts. That Mexican training vessel had a lot more problems than the power outage. One has to wonder about its level of training. |
| I believe they weren't intending to go under the bridge at all, it wasn't a height mismatch thing. Some people experienced with the river there said the currents can be extremely strong. So I believe the issue is they lost power and were dragged into the bridge by the current. |
| They had a tugboat that's who screwed up |
Yeah; that seems kinda racist. |
|
Correct, the talk sail ship lost power, floated backwards and its masts hit the bottom of the bridge. Unf sailors were up on the masts. So tragic. Too bad NYC couldn’t mobilize some tug boats to push the tall ship to a safe locate before it hit things and injured its crew. |
| What a beautiful tall ship. So tragic |
wtf we’re the escort tug boats doing!?!? They should have been on top of that the minute it showed up seeing Manhattan. How’d the tugboats let this $hit happen!? |
True, but would a power outage keep them from stopping or turning? |
Knowing the tides and current flow at what time given location is basic sailing. |
| Reminds me of the Bosphorus calamities, and they require paying for a temporary Turkish crew to get through. |
How do you think a boat this size stops or turns? They do so by reversing the engines, which wouldn't have been working if there was a power outage. |
As it's a tall ship, I would think it's something to do with the sails and tacking, but what do I know. |
Yes, 100%. I'm a sailor, and without either a motor or wind power (under sail), you would not be able to control the ship well. |
