My sophomore applied this winter for internships for the summer of Junior year. Months of interviews and he got his second choice. All in NYC. He didn't apply to any locally. It was a LOT of networking and a pretty common and normal process at his school.

He'll get some sort of job this summer but not an internship.

Also, this is her second summer with this team. Last year she applied to about ten jobs in Jan-Mar. Had two offers by spring break.

Wow this makes me question my DD going into CS where I hear kids applying to 200+ jobs starting in July and not getting offers. Is the CS major this competitive? Is this going to get even worse?

I have worked as an SWE consultant for the past twenty years at 15 different tech and financial service companies. IMHO, the internship usually comes down to who you know (or who knows you) and it has nothing to do with qualifications. I am currently consulting at a very well-known company in the DMV, and they have received about 2000+ applications for six Computer Sciences internship positions. 200 applications were selected for the initial phone interview, and 100 applications were selected for Zoom interview from the 200 application pools. Many of the applicants are from Dukes, Northwestern, Ivies, UVA, Michigan, UVA, and Virginia Tech. Six applicants were selected for those coveted internships, and they were from Brown, Cornell, UVA, Michigan, UPenn, and Dukes. However, five EVPs told the hiring manager that he had to exclude five of the six applicants to make room for candidates that have "connections" with them. In the end, of those six candidates that were selected for internships, only one from UVA was offered the internship. Being the most qualified candidate does not mean you will get the internship. YMMV.

Rising senior, business and CS. Will return to same company as last year in same city as school. Wish they would come back to Northeast but I guess you go where you get an internship. It is a Fortune 50 company

DS is Engineering not in CS, but many friends at Penn are. The main group of boys are sophomores and all have internships, some with companies some research. They applied in the fall/winter and had jobs lined up by February at the latest. Even the kid with under a 3.5 got a job fairly easily. None of them did anywhere near 200 applications. All but one are financial aid kids, none were through personal connections but some were faculty connections

Dukes? Is this how people actually refer to Duke, or did you manage to make the same typo twice?

It seems very difficult for my freshman to get a summer internship related to his field of study.

I know two Penn and one Cornell kid (Juniors) who are still looking for summer internships because they approached me since my firm has a internship program. They told they have applied extensively and have had no luck (I am not sure how many). It is fairly tough out there.

I just wanted to encourage those looking for CS internships to keep looking! My son is a sophomore CS major at Pitt with just above a 3.0. He had been applying since fall (not as many as he could but a decent amount) without getting interviews. In the past month he got 3 interviews and just got an offer without using any connections through family. All CS/IT positions. I have been surprised at all the CS opportunities around Pittsburgh (although he got the job near home).
