Sophomore DD is an environmental science major. Has a summer internship in natural resources management with our county.
Also, this is her second summer with this team. Last year she applied to about ten jobs in Jan-Mar. Had two offers by spring break.
Wow this makes me question my DD going into CS where I hear kids applying to 200+ jobs starting in July and not getting offers. Is the CS major this competitive? Is this going to get even worse?
I have worked as an SWE consultant for the past twenty years at 15 different tech and financial service companies. IMHO, the internship usually comes down to who you know (or who knows you) and it has nothing to do with qualifications. I am currently consulting at a very well-known company in the DMV, and they have received about 2000+ applications for six Computer Sciences internship positions. 200 applications were selected for the initial phone interview, and 100 applications were selected for Zoom interview from the 200 application pools. Many of the applicants are from Dukes, Northwestern, Ivies, UVA, Michigan, UVA, and Virginia Tech. Six applicants were selected for those coveted internships, and they were from Brown, Cornell, UVA, Michigan, UPenn, and Dukes. However, five EVPs told the hiring manager that he had to exclude five of the six applicants to make room for candidates that have "connections" with them. In the end, of those six candidates that were selected for internships, only one from UVA was offered the internship. Being the most qualified candidate does not mean you will get the internship. YMMV.
Dukes? Is this how people actually refer to Duke, or did you manage to make the same typo twice?
