The White House is publicly defending Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after he texted sensitive military information in a Signal chat. But behind the scenes, administration insiders are starting to express doubts about the Pentagon chief’s judgment.

Officials agree national security adviser Mike Waltz, who accidentally invited a journalist to a group chat with senior leaders, could more easily take the fall for a scandal that has embarrassed the administration — which may end up sparing Hegseth his job.

But Republican hawks, Pentagon officials and even some inside the White House now believe Hegseth also messed up by sending likely classified details from his phone. And that has the potential to undermine his credibility in the administration.

Because Trump clearly likes and has publicly exonerated Hegseth, “you’re not going to hear a huge public outcry,” said a senior GOP official on Capitol Hill who is close to the White House. “But, privately, there is a lot of concern about his judgment, more than with Waltz.”

Even for a Pentagon chief who has copied Trump’s pugilistic style — down to his Sharpie signature and campaign-style videos — Hegseth’s growing pile of mistakes are getting noticed, according to four officials and two people in touch with the administration.

“The problem is this is another example of inexperience,” said a person close to the White House, who like others, was granted anonymity to discuss a politically sensitive issue. “What happens when Hegseth needs to manage a real crisis?”

I’m sorry but he’s doing a great job.

By what measure?

He just blew the Houthis up with missiles. Biden couldn't do that.

I guess you missed the part where over 50 civilians were killed in the Houthi attack, including women and children. And the delicious tidbit contained in the Signal chat where participants applauded the bringing down of an entire apartment building to get at one bad guy. Sadly, our government has always dealt in Death and Destruction, and this one is no different.

It’s also DemocratIC Party, not “Democrat Party”. Could be a typo, but 99% of the time it’s deliberate disrespect. Misnaming your opponent is a popular propaganda tactic. Whenever you see that, the rest of the take can be discarded.

I know right? Whenever I see someone write “Democrat Party” I just skip to the next comment.

He won’t be fired or quit. That would derail their plans to declare martial law on April 20 and deploy the military to the southern border

Neocons are against Hegseth.
Waltz is the guy who brought the journalist in, but all the attacks are on Hegseth.

Biden absolutely could have done that, but he would have had a good rationale for doing so, respected the procedures for operational security and the laws around national security and safeguarding those on the frontlines involved. Instead we have a bunch of chickenhawks with emojis.

He’s an amateur in over his head, and it shows. It just gets worse from here. He won’t make it all four years.

If signalgate ends up being embarrassing enough for Trump, he'll throw Hegseth under the bus without a second thought. Ultimately, it all depends on Hegseth's value to Trump personally, and has nothing to do with how good or awful he is for the country or at his job. That's what it's like when you have a dictator or monarch instead of a president.

Ability isn’t even in the top 5 hiring requirements for Donald. Maybe the top 10 from what we’ve seen recently.
