Thanks for the update. I thought everybody had switched off of rolling gradebooks.

What do you mean? All FCPS MS and HS are required to use the same exact grading system. Rolling gradebooks, 70% of the grade is tests etc.

At my FCPS MS we were told we are no longer allowed to use rolling gradebooks. I was under the understanding that nobody was allowed.

It happened to us at the end of last quarter - HS. We coordinated with the teacher and they were able to adjust after the end of the quarter.

Ok. How was it adjusted? Was it adjusted only when the kid took the test? Did it change the quarter grade? Thanks.

Did your teacher also input 50%?

Are teachers required to input 50% on summatives for absent kids?

my kid is also out this week - they've been entering zeros for her tests. they're nuts.

I did. Teacher seems to think she must enter 50% as county policy and won’t change it until child takes the test.

my kid is sick this week 10th grader. already test marked with 0, not 50s. "but I just have to enter something" she gets told. I don't know why they dont realize this is super stressful for a kid.

I totally get it.

Teachers can submit a grade change form after the quarter ends, if necessary. With a rolling gradebook, they might not since the 3rd quarter grade is just a snapshot into the final grade. If they have a quarter gradebook, then the teacher could submit a grade change for the 3rd quarter grade.

I understand why a teacher puts in a 0, though. Theoretically a student could never make up the exam. It is better to submit a grade change from a lower to higher grade than a higher grade to a lower grade.

As a parent of a kid who has gotten sick and missed end-of-quarter tests, ensure they are excused absences. The teacher will enter a 0, and they can coordinate with the teacher to make it up after the quarter. The teacher will then take that missed test's grade, and the quarter's overall grade will be updated.

If I don’t put in a 50 (or a 0), kids don’t take it. (“But not my kid!” Okay, but 90% of kids) It’s just a reminder to come take it. I can’t email and follow up with the 4 kids in each class period who missed for various reasons (some legit, some not).

If you’re doing rolling gradebook by this point in the year there should be a minimum of 6 summative assignments, likely more, so even a 0 isn’t going to bring an A to a C (though I understand it could bring an A to a B)

Have your child email the teacher and arrange a time to take it NOW, before the end of the quarter, and explain the predicament about honor roll. Might work, might not. I’d be willing to fudge the grade for the report card and put it back after.

My kid is too sick to email at this point. I emailed the teachers to let them know. The teacher reached out to me to explain the penalty. I asked if there was anything they could do. The teacher will not budge. Seems overly harsh. Kid is an A student.
