This is the Federal site to check movers, but will only have companies that do intrastate moves: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move/search-mover
Avoid any company that has a hostage goods complaint. |

Why do you need full service?
My parents moved to a different country every 4-5 years, and our boxed move was paid for by my father's work, but not the actual putting into boxes, or getting stuff out of the boxes. My mother was disabled but still able to help. We all pitched in. As an adult, I moved my family within Maryland and we did everything ourselves (with a toddler and preschooler in tow!). I do NOT recommend that, but I do encourage you, if you can, to pack things yourself - you'll be more careful than the movers, and you'll remember where everything is and pack in a way that makes sense for you. I also second PP's suggestion to review movers closely and supervise them. |

We recently moved a 4 bdr from DC to MD, and it was $4k in the dead of winter for mostly self-packing. One estimator said that moving during the summer doubles the cost.
If you have fragile/valuable items, move those yourself. I would consider renting a minivan or larger SUV for the move so that you have access to these valuable items in your own car. Also, pack suitcases as if you were going to spend a few days at a hotel, as well as a box with things like toilet paper, paper towels, a few trash bags, disposable utensils, cups/mugs, instant coffee, milk boxes, fruit, snacks, easy breakfast food, and a pot, a package of pasta, a wooden spoon, and a jar of marinara and some parm for a quick and easy hot meal. Also be sure to have things like passports on you, rather than as part of the moving truck. Make sure to have cash on hand for tips. We had a moving crew of five and gave out $300 in tips. |
| We were quoted $6-8K for our small 4BR townhouse. |
| I was going to guess $10k. |
| It's just putting stuff in boxes for two days and driving a truck across the country. Rent a 30 foot Penske for $1000 for 5 days and do it yourself. |
Yes, this. When you rent the truck you can hire people to load and unload on either end right on the rental website. |
Because I can afford it and don’t want to do it. I will never pack myself again after having professional packers. |

We are moving in about a month and haven't gotten any quotes yet and need to get on it. Although I'm not sure we will even bother comparing quotes as we really liked the movers we used last time, so we might just get a quote from them and if it sounds reasonable book them.
We moved a year ago from a 2400 sq ft house in FCC to a 2100 sq ft house in Vienna last May and we packed ourselves and paid $2500 for the movers before tips. |
Did not move in Virginia but moved house in 2019 within an EC state. Moved from a two bedroom townhome to a 3 bedroom ranch style home 1 mile apart and it cost us almost $5k. We packed everything and brought expensive items (jewelry, heirloom china, paperwork, passports SSNs etc, certain art) on our own. It took all day and I think they sent over 4 people. We also tipped them each and had coffee and pastries / bagels when they arrived, water, paid for lunch also. But anything of value you bring over yourself! |
Doesn’t it cost you more than that to take the time off? |
No. Did you read the OP at all? |
This person was not OP. I am. I need full service because I am a disabled single mom. It’s really not helpful when an OP asks for one thing and people respond with “just do it a completely different way from the way you asked about!” |
Oh wow. This is eye opening because I’m moving 4 hours away. |
