How much does a full service move cost?

Anonymous
Assume a small, 2 bedroom house (but we have kind of a lot of stuff) and we'd need some help packing and unpacking. The move itself would be within Virginia but to a location 4 hours away. I think this will be VERY expensive but I don't know just how expensive.

~$3500

This is OP. I was estimating $5k, so this is better than I thought.

I think that poster was underestimating things greatly. I'd expect more in your range, if not more.

Ack, ok. Maybe I should plan on $7k. I have found that every move cost far more than I was expecting it to, when all was said and done.

Within state is good, so no crossing state lines which adds to the bill. But they charge by the mileage. Plus supplies if you need them, and packing/packing help, unpacking.

We paid more than $5k to move a bigger house (3 br). But no packing/unpacking. The estimate was a lot lower than the final total, so beware.

I would pack/unpack yourself if you (not employer) are paying.

I think these estimates are grossly underpriced if you actually mean completely packing everything and unpacking as in setting up everything in cabinets, closets, etc. I had a few corporate moves when I was just in a 2 bedroom condo, and a full service move is a lot more than these prices. If you just mean packing, moving it to the new place and placing furniture, maybe $7k. Full service at least $15

We paid $900 on each end to pack and unpack a 4300sf house. We packed our suitcases and nothing else. They did everything.

We moved across the country (2,000) miles so our cost probably isn’t relevant but it was $22,000. Cost was exactly what the estimate was.

Several states? A fully loaded family house? A couple vehicles moved too?

$20k

Relo costs cover it or ask for a bonus.

Get 2-3 quotes too as some were 25% more or less than others!

Takes 2 weeks due to them managing the drivers and leaving the trailers loaded but stationary.

Oh. You could prob drive this yourself and pay packers/loaders on each end.

I did that for my college move from Boston to NYc. But not nyc to here.

Packing a 2BDR home <2000sqft is 3-4 men for 3-6HRs depending on low end / light work or a full 100 box pack up.

Then moving will be a flat rate (usually flat rates >150mi distance) and could run the whole day - 9am load up 12:30-1 hit the road 4:30-5:30PM start unload 8:30PM truck empty

Figure $3-4k for the move itself plus packing (variable) plus materials - buy your own on uhaul.

Good luck and have a great move.

Be very careful picking your movers. There are no Federal regulations protecting moves entirely within one state. It's rare, but movers sometimes engage in behavior called hostage goods where they basically load all your stuff on the truck and then hold it ransom until you pay more money. Always vet movers very carefully.
