You are supposed to do both. The traditional method is fasting, prayer, almsgiving.

You can add in doing acts of service, but you can also give up something. The whole point is to be uncomfortable and go outside your normal baseline faith practice.

I’m giving up chocolate, but also adding in daily Bible reading.

Clearly you have become modern. You don't have to give up anything. Of course you should service despite what time of year it is.

I gave up alcohol 6 months ago. As an active alcoholic. I’m continuing giving up alcohol during Lent because it’s still a struggle for me and I don’t need to add to my plate right now. And God willing, I’ll continue to give it up after forever! Haven’t touched the stuff and I was drinking 2-3 bottles of wine a night.

Good for you! Keep up the great work.

I am (quietly) doing 40 charitable deeds.

Resentment.

I don’t know if I will be able to give it up completely, but if I end up moving my needle in a major way, it will be all to the good.

Some years what God's already brought you to is enough. Keep up the hard work PP, and may you be strengthened in your recovery.

I do not give things up for lent. I try to add more prayer and good intentions into my life. And I always hope that they have it remains post length. Sadly, it does not in most years. this year I feel like I need more spirituality in my life right now.

Fasting, almsgiving and giving up something is part of all religions don't need to be "Catholic" to do so and it doesn't need to be around this time of year either.

I gave up sugar. I have a huge sweet tooth and eat too much.

I also am doing the 40 day prayer challenge on the Hallow app.
