Do you give up anything for 40 days?

What are you planning?

I'm planning on 30 minutes of sleep being replaced by 30 minutes of prayer.

Prior years have included:

- coffee
- sugar
- books (my main hobby)

To focus on my spiritual life...which is the point if you're keeping Lent.

not the pp but they mention it's their main hobby which probably equates to way too much time spent on that hobby.

cutting back hours where you spend too much time can help you reallocate hours somewhere new that might be more useful such as working out for example.

I once went to a mass and the priest said don’t give up something that’s gojng to make you a cranky less pleasant person. Instead add something that will make you a better person. He said when he was in the army he gave up his occasional cigar and all his friends said it made him a much bigger jerk. So the next year he did something like add a rosary each morning.

I should give up weekend TV watching as I’m kind of an addict. But then I would also probably give up my exercise/stretching routine. I’m going to try to cut back but probably won’t have the will power if I’m honest.

On the one hand I totally understand the bolded (it's why I don't fast a full day on Lenten Fridays, just part of it...so I can still be nice to my family). On the other hand, isn't part of the point to learn to rely on God to be less cranky?

You are supposed to do both. The traditional method is fasting, prayer, almsgiving.

You can add in doing acts of service, but you can also give up something. The whole point is to be uncomfortable and go outside your normal baseline faith practice.

I’m giving up chocolate, but also adding in daily Bible reading.
