I like high protein milk. |
No protein powders are FDA approved and many are full of lead and other things that are terrible for you. I am a vegetarian and recently when down this road of trying to find options for adding protein, and I was lovingly but sternly redirected back to actual protein sources by my friend who has a PhD in toxicology. Here's a source: https://cleanlabelproject.org/blog-post/new-study-of-protein-powders-from-clean-label-project-finds-elevated-levels-of-heavy-metals-and-bpa-in-53-leading-brands/ |
Eat real food. |
Guys, the title of the post is about how to make protein powder taste good. It's not asking if you think I should eat beans and meat instead. If you don't have anything to say on topic, then don't answer! |
Try Optimum Nutrition Gold Double Rich Chocolate. I just drink two scoops with water and it’s fine. |
Sorry, but when someone says they're looking for ways to make LEAD taste good the rational response is "You shouldn't eat lead!" |
I mix mine with unsweetened vanilla almond milk and use an immersion blender to get it frothy and well blended. I add a little bit of iced coffee and try to trick myself into thinking I'm drinking an iced mocha latte.
Using some sort of milk product instead of water and mixing with a stick blender or nutribullet will improve the texture dramatically. |
I don't think there is a way to make it taste better, unfortunately. Perhaps try a different brand? |
So I skip the protein powder and drink bone broth. Bonus: it also has collagen and it tastes way better than some dodgy powder. |
Here's the real answer -
either you like the taste or you don't. To blend better, put the powder in a small amount of almond milk, blend with and handheld blender. Then mix the liquid in with the yogurt. Or blend the protein powder, milk and Jello pudding packet. The key is getting the powder to dissolve completely into a liquid. |
OP I had the same problem. Ended up with ORA "so lean and so lean". I put it in hot water for a morning drink, melts totally with no grainy texture. I do mix the unflavored with either the chai latte flavor or the chocolate. That's because I personally don't like sweet. The product has been run by several nutritionist friends. Here's link so you can research yourself.

+1 This is old school, and it's still around because it works and it doesn't taste awful. |
I like most of the ghost protein powders that don't have bits in them (some have cookie bits; I can't handle the texture, but they're probably better blended with ice and not just shaken in a shaker bottle). The cinnabon one is dead-on, and really good with a bit of coldbrew instead of just plain water
Most of the proteins by Optimum Nutrition are decent to good. There are some clear whey proteins now that have fruity or lemonade flavors. One tastes like a melted bomb pop (popsicle). I like those in summer. These taste almost exactly like bubble tea (but don't come with boba; add your own IIFYM): https://bobateaprotein.com/ To make most powders more manageable, blend them with ice and fruit for smoothies. Things that were unpalatable plain are easier to get down when cold and somewhat disguised. |
I like most of the ones I have tried from musclesport. And all the quest ones I like too. |
OP I hate protein powder because it all smells like vitamins to me. Same with protein bars. But I still find most days I need a supplement to hit my protein goal, so I get the Fairlife shakes. They taste exactly like chocolate milk, and you don’t have to mix them.
Downsides are there is more plastic waste and they are expensive, though Costco has a decent price on them. |
