I turned it on thinking it would be funny, silly relief from a very stressful month here in DC and ended up sobbing. But I do recommend it. There are funny parts! I was just so emotionally raw already that I guess I was ready to let it out. |
It’s not funny.
The only funny parts involve Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson—because they are talented actors who do comedy well. Leo Woodall has a weird face. He got lucky with One Day but he’s just not hot enough for this role. The actor she ends up with is Darcyesque but doesn’t exude any sex appeal or chemistry with Zellwegger. Why can’t she get her hooded eyes fixed? At this point I’m convinced she’s actually squinting on purpose. Anyway, they should have ended the movie with her getting back with Grant. There’s chemistry there—even if it’s mostly Grant carrying the scenes. It they could have made Zellwegger look more pulled together—perhaps after a fun makeover scene—when she met the “boy.” And perhaps cast a young guy who was a bit like Darcy or Daniel. If the latter, it would have been a good storyline to have Daniel point out the boy is just like he was in his younger days and then have him pursue her. Daniel could ultimately be the “boy.” Hollywood stinks these days. |
I actually liked that the younger guy was not that hot, was a scientist, and that Bridget did not get a makeover. These sorts of couples do exist irl and not only with 50yos who look hot and perfect. She has other fish to fry as a widow with little kids. And we all know after watching him for decades that while Daniel is funny and can be charming and caring he is NOT a good romantic partner and that will not change. It would have been regression and immaturity for Bridget to fall for him. The teacher was dry and shy like Darcy and a perfect fit. |
Didn't she have work done several years ago and looked literally unrecognizable? Now she's back to looking like herself but older, and I think she looks great in recent promotional interviews. I was wondering how the bad work got "fixed"? |
? It is what it is. You can't really get new actors for these roles. |
Nobody suggested getting new actors. Perhaps use older kids? Perhaps don’t use a baby-faced actor for the “boy” unless you doll Renee up a bit? Zero chance a twenty-something would go after a 55 year old woman in mom jeans and unbrushed graying hair. Completely unrealistic. |
It was ok, had its moments. Wrapped up the series nicely, hope that’s the end of it. |
To me she passes as mid to late 40s and I’ve met women that age with little kids so it doesn’t shock me at all. She got married in her late 30s didn’t she? And Bridget has something charming about her which is why men like Cleaver and Darcy, plus Darcy’s gorgeous friend (Lucinda?) all fell for her. It was never about her looks. |
I thought it was cute, I think many of you are way overthinking this movie. I enjoyed it! |
Surprised that I loved it! Cried a lot, actually laughed out loud several times. The crowd reactions during the pool scene were hysterical |
I'm about fifteen minutes into it. Why is RZ whispering? She doesn't sound like Bridget. |
NYT reviewed very positively, so I'm intrigued. I hated at least one of the sequels. Is there any way to watch this in the US without subscribing to Peacock? |
Okay, I don't know about this. I'm trying to like it, but RZ is just making these odd faces and she's still whispering and she can't seem to do the accent anymore. |
In the movie they say Roxster's about 28 and she's 27 years older than him |
Apparently she's supposed to be 51 in the movie, but I believe they said that Mark was 55 when he died four years prior and he was four years Bridget's senior, which would make her 55. Either way, the kids are too young. Believe it or not, twenty-something men do go for frumpy middle aged women. And Roxster is actually really ugly, he's just young and fit. I thought it was okay, but Renee Zellwegger played Bridget so differently than in the other movies. Her voice was completely different, and she wasn't so much quirky as just...odd. She made weird faces the whole movie and didn't walk normally. I know she's supposed to be a mess, but I felt like I was watching a different character entirely. All of the other characters were older versions of themselves, while Bridget almost seemed like she'd been re-cast. I might have liked it more if I hadn't seen the other movies. |
