The federal government owns the property but doesn’t manage daily operations there. A private company out of NYC controlled operations (like all the leases with the retail there, maintenance, etc) but COVID hit them hard. I don’t remember all the details but I think they defaulted on their loan and were trying to sell their leasehold interest, and then Amtrak took it over or is trying to take it over. Union Station of 2020 was already in decline (IMO) compared to the Union Station of a decade before that, but it’s really taken a nose dive after COVID. The security situation is also really complicated there because of overlapping jurisdiction of MPD, Amtrak police, WMATA police, and US Park Police (NPS owns the plaza out front). Union Station has always been my favorite building in DC and it makes me so sad what’s happening there now. |
And are you that much of an idiot to think that post wasnt being sarcastic? -DP |
Area needs a refresh. But who will take on that project? |
Scott Jennings isn't a reporter. He's a conservative CNN commentator. I wonder if his witnessing the murder ends up expediting a federal takeover of DC. Local government does not seem willing to handle violent crime. There'd be a lot of support for a federal takeover of the DC City Council. |
No, he would want to sell Optimus as robocops

I lived on the Hill from 1997-2005, I loved stopping at B Smiths after work for a drink with friends. I went to so many movies in the basement too!! |
Yeah, that movie theater had such character. Most of my professional wardrobe came from that Ann Taylor in Union Station. I could name most of the food court restaurants from that era too. |

https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/02/10/shooting-union-station-dc/
"Detectives are reviewing video footage that shows the victim and shooter walked into the waiting area of the garage — which services Greyhound and other bus lines — and “seemed to know each other,” Smith said. Smith said the victim grabbed something off the shooting suspect, who then began firing their gun. The victim then ran out of the waiting area and collapsed near the escalator, she said." Based on this description, I don't know what Union Station or the DC police could have done to specifically prevent this incident, other than hiring 10,000 extra police to guard every public space in the city. More generally, we need to get guns off the street. |
True about guns. But the federal government has been harmful and not helpful to DC in this regard. |
More importantly, we need to get criminals off the streets. Throw them all in jail. |
This is definitely Biden’s fault. 100% guarantee the shooter was released from custody for prior violent crimes under the Biden administration. |
Why should I not be permitted to legally carry my gun because a criminally illegally carried and used one? How does restricting me make you or anyone else safer? I was no danger to you to begin with, and the people who ARE a danger to you will ignore the law anyway. So how are you safer if I’m more vulnerable? |
Because you’re not as good a shot as you think you are. |
They’ll never get this rationale. All they can do is blame Trump, blame the GOP, and refuse to take responsibility for the mess we call our cities. This continuous violence is due to soft on crime prosecutors and bad parenting. |
