A private company out of NYC controlled operations (like all the leases with the retail there, maintenance, etc) but COVID hit them hard. I don’t remember all the details but I think they defaulted on their loan and were trying to sell their leasehold interest, and then Amtrak took it over or is trying to take it over. Union Station of 2020 was already in decline (IMO) compared to the Union Station of a decade before that, but it’s really taken a nose dive after COVID. The security situation is also really complicated there because of overlapping jurisdiction of MPD, Amtrak police, WMATA police, and US Park Police (NPS owns the plaza out front).
