Admin Leave - what are you telling your kids?

Tell them the truth. You are going to lose your job and changes are likely to occur. They KNOW something is up, be honest about what this administration intends to do your family. Praying you don't have daughters

Seriously other than DEI folks and EPA’s EJ folks, who else?

I would hold up a picture of Musk and teach them the meaning of the word “wanker.”

They are old enough to hear (and find out) the truth.

Just calmly state that the new administration is making some unorthodox moves, which may not hold up to legal challenge.

But while this all gets worked out, your family will be fine.

That last part is important to convey. So your kids aren’t anxious.

USAID was overturned. DOE and OPM are mostly still talk. Who else?

It wasn’t “overturned.” Why are you making things up?

This is the generation that got shafted during COVID. And now they may see their parents get screwed by two rich men.

Oh, and not just feds, either. Thus shxtshow’s gonna trickle down to the masses.

It should be interesting when they start taking over things in 20 years. 🤔

I would be honest with them. They aren’t little kids.

Im talking to my 7 year old pretty frankly about it so I can’t imagine not talking to teens about it. Im not on admin leave, but very at risk for job loss talking about the political shifts and how it is impacting my job, he understands it is stressful but in an age appropriate way. It is impossible to completely hide the stress the last few weeks so better to address it a little bit though not dwell. This is history, learning about how people exploit power, what motivates them, it’s learning. I don’t talk about it in this way exactly since my kid is young, but I do explain some of the aspects in age appropriate ways to start to teach lessons about politics, power, government, wealth etc. there is sooo much there for a teen to learn. Just make sure it is in a way that is very clear that we are safe, we are prepared. I’ve said to my kid if I were to lose my job, we’ve prepared for that and are lucky we have been able to save and we would be just fine to make sure if he overhears my husband and I talking he doesn’t feel worried. So if on admin leave I would explain that too.

You dont need to tell your kids anything because nothing has happened to you. You can talk about changes in government if you think they're interested. You can talk about logistics changes if your in office days are changing.

If you are laid off you tell them it's fine and that you'll be making responsible choices to keep the family running.

You dont need to be dramatic.

Ooo, op you clearly don't know anyone who worked with USAID. There are thousands of contractor and implementer orgs that worked for USAID that are out of jobs!!!

This happens at private sector every day.

are you the same poster on every thread? do you realize how people take government jobs with expectation of lower pay but better stability/benefits and they have specialized skills that don't exist in private sector (usaid). i'm not even a federal employee and cannot understand these repeated dumb comments

Oh, I’m hoping for a riot/protest. There are so many more of us than them.
