What makes the "worst" hs's in FCPS so bad?

Actually, the bottom 4 schools were all below the national average of 1509, and the bottom 6 schools were all below the Virginia average score of 1521.

Which is not surprising considering the student populations (international, low-income, etc.) these schools are educating.

I'm confused now!? Can you indicate the county/city for each of these schools?

This is useful data. It would be even more helpful if the demographics (% of ESOL/FRL, sort by race) of the school's test takers were factored in. Is that data readily available as an overlay? Is that information considered inappropriate? These are not meant to be snarky questions.

The demographics for each school, I think, are easily available. OTOH, not so sure about the test takers from each school.

That'd involve emails to school boards, etc., and in some cases (e.g. FRL for Langley), there'd be so few data points as to make it useless.

OK-anyone know how supportive the lower ranked HSs are for college bound kids? Do Edison and West Potomac get ehri fair share of kinds into UVa, or only the top 8 kids in the class?
Anonymous
Sorry should have been: fair share of kids

At some point that info, with SAT test scores by demographic category, FRL status, etc., will be up on the FCPS website in the invidual school profiles. It's currently available for past years, but I don't have the time to compile it all. For example, for McLean High school follow this link: http://commweb.fcps.edu/schoolprofile/profile.cfm?profile_id=030 Then click on the "test results" tab and the SAT link and you can see SAT scores disaggregated by lots of categories. I wonder when they'll have that kind of detail posted for the most recent SAT ...

Thank you 09:35! Just what I was hoping to find.

We have kids going to Rose Hill Elementary (I think it's 60% hispanic and 49% receive free or reduced lunch). We're a very happy with it. It's a feeder school to Edison and our neighbors' kids go there. With one exception, every one is happy with it. That exception sends her kids to Catholic school because (gasp!) some of the kids from Edison drop out! There are kids who are in Section 8 housing and kids who are in houses that cost a $1M+. As much as I'd like it, I have no expectation that our kids will go to UVA because this area is saturated with high achieving, adversity defying kids and we're just average. There's a quota for kids from NOVA and I'm not willing to stress my kids out and have them busting their asses just to get into UVA. There's more to life than test scores and UVA.

Very few houses in the Edison district go for over $1 million these days. May have been more during the bubble era. Glad you're happy with your neighborhood school, though.

NP ... I think the Wilton Woods and Ashby Manor neighborhoods probably have million dollar houses still, or close enough to make PPs point on economic diversity.

Anonymous wrote:Agreeing with both PP's. I attended West Potomac and there isn't anything bad about that school as far as the education goes. I was in all AP courses and received an excellent education. So would your child, if they were so inclined.

What most people that you're talking about say bad they mean too many poor, low performing, chip eating kids. They don't want those kids influencing theirs. Which is interesting because there are plenty of well off families in these schools as well. It is Fairfax County after all.

That being said I have a lot of friends that graduated from Annandale, but I would avoid it at the moment because I believe it is over crowded this year.

I'll watch out for those chip eating kids. LOL

Sure, the area may be diverse. Most places in NoVa are. OTOH, there are very few houses in the Edison district that sell for over $1M these days, and they generally are in the Clermont ES, not Rose Hill ES, district. I realize this is about quality schools, not real estate, but why not be accurate?
