A Real Pain - movie with Kieran Culken and Jesse Eisenberg

Oh I cannot wait. But deal Lord I cannot wait for the day that a movie set in Poland has nothing to do with the Holocaust.

Ever heard of Kieslowski? Wajda? Lots of great Polish movies are not about Holocaust

Respect both themes deeply but just too much of it lately on screen.

But every person and thus every character in every movie has a race and ethnicity. Do you mean you want to watch a movie where the characters are all your race and ethnicity? Because I can think of lots of movies where the characters don't ever talk about these topics but if you aren't familiar with their background it might stick out to you.

Hilarious is not the word I would use to describe this - it's about two cousins, one of whom tried to kill himself, visiting a concentration camp in Poland, while trying to figure out their own lives and reconnect with each other. There are funny moments, but it's overall not a lighthearted movie at all.

I loved it.

I found it dull, which I hadn’t expected.

I seem to recall an interview he did with a female reporter a few years back where he came across as a real jerk.

I think it's just his odd hipster affect. It's very particular, and offputting to many. I liked seeing him in a different, more mature role in Fleishman is in Trouble but here he's back to his same old same old diffident, mumbling persona. Kieran Culken was good but the charming snark underlaid by emotional pain and need was too similar to his Succession role to be especially interesting imo.

Perhaps you would like the Bob Dylan movie with Timothee Chalomet?

Watched it today and really liked it.

The thing I don’t like about Jesse Eisenberg is that in all of his roles, I feel like I’m watching Jesse Eisenberg. He doesn’t become the character. His characters are just him in different settings. That worked in this movie because I have a feeling he and the character he wrote for himself are pretty damn similar.

Some actors are one-trick ponies. They just don't have a lot of range. Tom Cruise comes to mind.

Exactly. And in all of the movies he comes across as an “I’m smarter than you” jerk. He reminds me of so many guys I knew growing up, none of whom I liked.

Wow, I liked this a lot more than I expected, particularly since I’m one of those people who doesn’t really like Jesse Eisenberg. It was more subtle than I thought it was going to be. There is also something very real about the cousin dynamic, where you are so close in some ways but also, really not.

I also really liked Jennifer Grey!

Overall, was it the best movie ever? No, but very memorable thanks to a great performance from Kieran Culkin embodying a really good character.

Yea, I have. They are legendary. But I meant Hollywood movies.

I loved this movie. So well-written and thought provoking. I’m glad it got the best screenplay nomination
